Job Description

The Sensors Division at STR focuses on technology development for advanced sensor systems, particularly in the areas of airborne/surface-based radar, electronic warfare, underwater acoustics, hyperspectral imaging, and EO/IR sensing. Within these specialties, we perform work ranging from full-system prototypes to technology component development. Specialties within the Sensors Division include RF analog/digital hardware, acoustic hardware, signal processing algorithms, machine learning algorithms, tracking/fusion, as well as real-time embedded processor implementation.
As a Principal Modeling and Simulation (M&S) Engineer for the Prototype Systems and Technology Group in Sensors Division, you will lead teams working a portfolio of projects focused on advanced modelling and simulation (M&S) capabilities, including RF system development, capability implementation, and integration of emerging capabilities into M&S environments. A particular growth area is the development of real-time M&S capabilities paired with hardware-in-the-loop simulation in support of operational test and evaluation efforts.
As part of this growing effort, you will supervise a portfolio of programs, lead technical teams, and develop additional work in the M&S area, with a focus on delivering new capabilities and integrating new platforms and sensors. Additionally, you will analyze broader company efforts and industry trends to evaluate current and future system capabilities and recommend ways to embed these capabilities in real-time federated simulation systems at the proper level of fidelity.
This position requires skills in performing and leading multi-disciplinary teams designing and analyzing complex systems and representing them in simulation. Strong technical, interpersonal, communication, and technical leadership skills are needed.
Responsibilities:

  • Leading multi-disciplinary teams to architect, develop, implement, and test large-scale physics-and effects-based simulations to evaluate system performance in operationally relevant scenarios.
  • Interfacing with sponsor organizations to drive and develop technical development of federated modeling and simulation systems.
  • Designing and implementing event and agent-based modeling in C/C++ from verified algorithms written in other languages and development environments.
  • Developing expertise in the capabilities of current and future US and threat weapon systems and platforms
  • Maintaining and extending simulation tools to carry out high-level and detailed physics-based evaluations of system performance.
  • Leading development efforts that improve and implement novel sensor processing capabilities for airborne radar systems
  • Leading development efforts for simulations of algorithms and systems
  • Designing and Extending system capabilities via Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) processes and encoding the system characteristics in a model to drive code development and validation.
  • Working with RF sensor engineering teams to develop system models and conduct performance analyses for the purposes of design trades and maximizing sensor performance
  • Developing business opportunities and leading the resulting customer engagement and proposal generation efforts.

Requirements:

  • US Citizenship with active security clearance
  • Post-graduate education in electrical engineering, physics, applied mathematics or related technical discipline
  • Substantial technical management experience leading teams on advanced R&D programs (e.g., NAVAIR, DARPA, AFRL, ONR, ARL research projects)
  • Experience designing and testing modeling and simulation (M&S) codebases for large-scale environments
  • Experience integrating new elements into existing modeling and simulation (M&S) environments
  • Proven success translating challenging customer operational requirements into solutions that bridged technical gaps through tailored development and implementation of results
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to describe complex concepts to fellow researchers, and to non-technical stakeholders
  • Track record of success in key technical customer liaison roles, such as primary point of contact to customers, co-contractors, and subcontractors
  • Extensive experience with computing, programming, and analysis tools, such as C/C++, python, MATLAB, Simulink, etc.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active Security Clearance at Top Secret (TS) level with experience in special access programs relevant to tactical aviation
  • Ph.D. degree in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or closely related technical discipline
  • Experience as a senior technical leader (e.g., Principal Investigator, Chief Engineer) for advanced development efforts in DoD programs
  • Broad experience across multiple defense-related RF disciplines (e.g., Communications, Electronic Warfare, Radar, etc.)
  • Experience with design and systems engineering of complex systems, including familiarity with digital design approaches such as use of Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) paradigms and SysML-based models and tools.
  • Experience with advanced Modelling and Simulation (M&S) environments used to represent tactical military aviation applications
  • Experience with Testing and Evaluation (T&E), especially in Operational Test (OT) of tactical military aircraft
  • Experience with advanced computing and processing architectures
  • Experience with multi-level security architectures used for computing and processing
  • Experience with big data analytics and applications of machine learning and artificial intelligence
  • Experience with programs and platforms in operational military aviation domains, especially regarding U.S. Naval Aviation and U.S. Air Force tactical aircraft
  • Experience with advanced sensor system technologies, such as multi-dimensional signal processing, space-based sensing systems, multi-function phased array apertures, and advanced EO/IR sensing

Education:

  • Post-graduate education in electrical engineering, physics, applied mathematics or related technical discipline
  • Ph.D. degree in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or closely related technical discipline
