Molecular Diagnostics at Abbott has an opening at its Des Plaines IL Headquarters, has an opening for The Principal Software Engineer within its Software Systems Engineering / R&D team.

• The Principal Software Engineer applies an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to plan, design, develop and verify system software.
• Has extensive knowledge in programming languages such as C++ or Python.
• Creates, modifies & designs for complex problems and can execute all stages of the software development lifecycle.
• Has good business knowledge or exceptional technical skills.
• Communicates effectively to both internal teams and external customers.
• Provides technical guidance to less experienced engineers.
• Assesses areas impacted by new feature requests and determines approach to accommodate new capabilities.
• Has mastery of all necessary development tools.
• Stays current in all areas of software development.
• Excels in learning all the new methods and tools that are being used in software process.
• Does not make design decision solely based on technical merit - always takes business, risk, and maintenance concerns into account.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:
• Has a complete understanding of the software development process, participates in the development of the software process, can identify shortcomings in the process and recommend modifications to address process issues.
• Provides technical guidance to less experienced engineers and serves as technical expert. Explains the system to them and ensures that they understand their areas of responsibility. Serves as a mentor for less experienced engineers.
• Communicates with outside decision makers in a manner appropriate to the goals of the communication and has effective presentation skills.
• Able to convey the implications of changes to internal and external stakeholders who have differing levels of understanding of the process.
• Integrates subsystems and components in total systems designs; develops specifications from customer requirements.
• Provides effort estimates for software functionality. Plans, conducts, and technically directs projects or sub-systems of significant projects. Assesses areas impacted by new feature requests and determine approach to accommodate new capabilities.
• Proactively takes on responsibility.
• Implements leading technologies in a technical field. Incorporates advancements in technology on current project.
• Develops High Level Design for entire software application, which includes ability to assign capabilities to components, negotiate interactions between components, and identify and resolve component interaction issues. Conducts reviews at the feature-level.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE, YOU'LL BRING:

• Bachelor's Degree required
• 8 years of relevant experience in Software Engineering
• Expert level ability to conduct thorough data analytics & implement data-driven solutions
• Demonstrated ability to efficiently communicate technical topics to all level within their team

Preferred

• 5+ years' experience designing and developing Python under Windows
• 3+ years' experience leading software teams (at least 2 people)
• Some exposure to embedded systems development (hardware/software interface control)
• Some exposure to medical device development and design controls

This position is to lead a small team (1 to 2) of software engineers developing Maintenance and Diagnostic (M&D) procedures written in Python.
