Risk is a big challenge in this industry. At the same time, it brings many opportunities for innovation to make payment safe. At Marqeta, we invest in the risk area end-2-end using big data and Machine Learning/AI technology on top of large-scale platform software development to make risk products a competitive differentiator of the company.
We are looking for a solid, hands-on, and experienced technical leader (Principal Software Engineer) in the risk product area, including velocity control, payment control, 3 Domain Secure, etc. These will include architecture design, implementation, production, and team growth. The platforms here need to be at an immense scale, with very high reliability and low latency, presenting a fantastic opportunity for a technical leader to practice and grow with real and challenging business problems and huge impact potential. This position reports to the Director in Velocity Control and 3DS.

As a critical leader in the Data team (including Risk), you will have the opportunity to influence and contribute to our vision, direction, and strategy, as well as how we architect and develop our platforms and products.
What You'll Do- Actively participate and guide/support team members on architecture design, problem diagnostics/solving, and engineering best practices, including automation. Challenge the team and raise the bar to serve customers and fast-growing business needs.
- You will work with team members and partners on analyzing technical and business problems on various new or existing systems in the risk area, especially on velocity control, spend control, 3DS, etc. You will identify opportunities and design ways to build new or make existing systems scalable, reliable, and performant to serve customers well, considering both short-term and long-term needs. Join forces with others on implementations, all the way to production deployment and execution.
- Contribute to developing vision, strategy, and roadmap to meet business objectives with existing or emerging technologies in the risk area, especially on velocity control, spend control, 3DS, etc., by partnering with other stakeholders and partners.
- Foster learning, innovation, leveraging and building on applicable new technologies, and a solid customer-centric service mindset.
- Apply creative thinking/approach to determine technical solutions that further business goals and align with company strategies. Advocate and practice engineering principles, including Security/Privacy, Quality, Reliability, Usability, Scalability/Performance, Productivity/Efficiency, and Operability.
- Demonstrate strong leadership. Helping build and grow a healthy and highly performant team, attract high talents, and provide effective coaching to team members.
- Define product/service success metrics and SLAs and track them toward agreed targets.
- Operational Excellence: monitoring & operating production services, including understanding user experience and ensuring happy customers.
- Build strong partnerships with internal stakeholders/partners across the company and external customers.
- Contribute to building Marqetar's technology brand through internal and external initiatives.
- Bachelor's degree in a technical field such as computer science and computer engineering. A higher degree is a bonus.
- Experience demonstrating strong leadership, self-motivation, accountability, and team player.
- You have 15+ years of industry experience in large-scale software development. Experience building and using large-scale data and ML/AI platforms is a plus.
- You have 5+ years of hands-on large-scale, high-reliability, and high-performance platform development experience.
- You possess a strong business and technical vision and a solid customer-centric mindset.
- Experience with agile development methodology.
- Strong at identifying problems, solving complex problems with simple solutions
- Solid at architecture design of large-scale, reliable, and performant systems/platforms that customers love.
- Deep expertise and hands-on experience in Risk, authentication, big data, and ML/AI technology. Experience with cloud technology.
- You are a solid technical goal-setter and deliver measurable and actionable success metrics—good knowledge and experience in measuring and monitoring service from a user experience angle.
- Exceptional collaboration and partnership skills.
- Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills. A demonstrated ability to effectively communicate technical and business issues and solutions to multiple organizational levels internally and externally.
