Our Brilliant Black Minds team is committed to doubling the number of Black software engineers in tech over the next ten years. As our company's flagship purpose program, this team amplifies the brilliance found in the software engineering community of underrepresented minority developers through exposure, access, and fairness. As the only program of its kind, Karat enables its global network of Interview Engineers to make technical interviews more accessible, and the interview experience itself more equitable.
What you will do
As the Senior Communications Manager for Brilliant Black Minds, your mission will be to engage and activate the Black software engineering community in support of the expansion of the Brilliant Black Minds program.
  • Create an annual communications plan and quarterly strategies for the Brilliant Black Minds program inclusive of reporting on key success metrics
  • Develop candidate communications strategy based on insights and needs from the program. This includes:
    • Oversee candidate newsletter distribution, content creation, and measurement. Review and approve content for publication
    • Develop and publish user testimonials and Partner of Brilliance case studies
    • Partner with Karat's social media team to share meaningful and engaging content for the Brilliant Black Minds community
  • Drive partner-specific communication plans to reach software engineers via 3rd party industry partners like the National Society for Black Engineers , Inroads , and /dev/color , as well as corporate partners like Prime Video, Citi, and Indeed
    • Lead cross-partner communication strategy for key program moments
    • Coordinate partner comms reviews and approvals
    • Oversee the strategic development of partner workshop programs
    • Develop and maintain partner guidelines and toolkits for communications and social media
  • Lead external communications for the program in partnership with corporate communications partners
    • Support communications opportunities with our Champion of Brilliance, Serena Williams, partnering with Karat leadership and corporate communications teams
    • Support the executive platform of Karat's Vice President of Brilliant Black Minds (media opportunities, social media presence and speaking engagements)
    • Build relationships with key media contacts and influencers to expand coverage of the program with relevant audiences and manage engagements
    • Develop a speaking program; identify where Brilliant Black Minds leaders should attend, pitch speakers, and manage communication needs for these events
    • Build and maintain a program press kit that aligns with Karat brand guidelines
    • Manage digital asset creation and agency/vendor support for the program and partner with other teams across Karat on communications strategies as needed

The experience you will bring
  • 10+ years of work experience in communications, journalism, or marketing
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience engaging and influencing senior executives
  • Strong experience across key communications disciplines: PR, social media, executive platforms, writing, etc.
  • Passion for driving more diversity in tech, and deep understanding of the early-career Black and/or URM engineering audience
  • Experience working with the HBCU community, STEM industry organizations, or software developers is a strong plus.
  • Ability to empathize with partner needs and drive alignment excellent written and oral communication skills, including experience engaging and influencing senior executives
  • History building large-scale communication plans, as well as successfully executing against them
  • Strong ability to multi-task and work across a variety of projects at one time
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, prioritizing clarity and brevity
  • Experience working successfully in ambiguity - you are able to create clarity through quick change and partner effectively and collaborate cross-functionally

This is a full-time, salaried position. Immigration sponsorship is not available.
Karat's HQ is based in Seattle, Washington, but our core team is distributed throughout the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom. For this position, we are considering candidates who are located within the greater United States and have posted this job description broadly with that in mind.
