Position Overview

As SingleStore’s first dedicated privacy counsel, and to support SingleStore’s commitment to privacy, you will be responsible for partnering with the relevant business team on all privacy, security, and data matters for the company globally. This is a rare and exciting opportunity that allows you to play a key role at a high-growth tech company and apply your leadership skills and vision to the role. You will report to the General Counsel, liaise with senior leaders on the engineering and product teams, and work closely and collaboratively with teams across all levels in legal, marketing, revenue, information technology, and people ops.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Work on the Legal team to lead the privacy function at SingleStore, including all aspects of privacy and data protection compliance and incident management, including implementing and improving privacy and data protection policies, procedures, and protocols, and overseeing and monitoring compliance with applicable privacy and data protection laws
  • Provide legal advice and support on a wide range of day-to-day commercial and privacy and data protection law matters, including technology initiatives, cybersecurity, data sharing/transfer, privacy and data protection notices and consents, data protection impact assessments, legitimate interest assessments, data breach response, data subject rights, and information governance
  • Provide legal and regulatory guidance on the design and modification of products, proactively identify associated risks and recommend mitigation strategies, review product user experiences to ensure legal compliance and proper disclosures, and help document guidance for consumption by members of the engineering, product, marketing, revenue, and legal teams
  • Manage cross-functional privacy-related projects
  • Provide legal advice and support on commercial issues concerning general intellectual property, confidential information, representations and warranties, indemnification and liability disclaimers, contract interpretation, commercial dispute resolution and litigation management 
  • Manage and respond to data subject access requests 
  • Key stakeholder for breach response planning and execution 
  • Monitor and advise on evolving global privacy legislation and standards 
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and training to SingleStore team members in all matters related to privacy

What You Should Have

  • A positive, can-do attitude and collaborative spirit 
  • A desire to partner with and educate non-legal team members in a constructive and motivational way
  • J.D. with strong academic credentials and demonstrated record of success as a lawyer and member of local state bar or eligible to register as registered in-house counsel
  • 8+ years of experience, including at least 5+ years of direct privacy experience in an in-house or reputable firm setting (ideally a mix of both)
  • Specific experience working with, and knowledge of, privacy laws applicable to businesses, such as CCPA, CPRA, GDPR, TCPA, as well as other U.S. state and federal privacy and data security and global data protection laws
  • IAPP designation or equivalent
  • Experience counseling product teams on compliance with regulations in other industries and markets, such as healthcare or FinTech, is also highly desirable
  • Capacity to think strategically to identify issues and develop long-term solutions
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously and manage major projects to successful completion in a fast-paced and changing environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
