The Opportunity

The Senior Manager, Internal Communications, Diagnostics, leads internal, executive, and employee communications. The position reports to the Senior Director of Diagnostics Public Affairs.

The Senior Manager is responsible for developing internal communications objectives for multiple Diagnostics businesses with 20,000+ employees worldwide. The Senior Manager will turn the objectives into a strategy with actionable plans and ensure their execution. The Senior Manager will align resources to the division's needs and manage the long-term and short-term operations.

The Senior Manager also liaises closely with Abbott's Corporate Employee Communications team to ensure consistency with the corporation's overarching internal communication strategy and messages.

The Senior Manager is responsible for supporting the Diagnostics division's communications needs, including senior leadership communications, employee meeting communications and employee resource communications.

What You'll Work On

Core Job Responsibilities

  • Works directly with the Executive Vice President of Core Diagnostics, Executive Vice President of Rapid and Molecular Diagnostics, and other senior staff to develop employee communications across the global Diagnostics businesses.
  • Ensures the workforce is educated and engaged on business strategy and priorities to help drive business performance, divisional initiatives and achieve its goals.
  • Works to align internal communications to key business external campaigns and priorities.
  • Manages external vendors for Division meetings, communications projects and planning globally. This will require significant coordination, interaction and collaboration with leaders across commercial, marketing, finance and regional functions.
  • Oversees the aLIVE digital channel for Diagnostics, the division's primary global employee communications vehicle for business-specific content and resources; liaises with Abbott Corporate Employee Communications to update content on Abbott World, the corporation's primary global communications vehicle and most-visited portal.
  • Drives employee engagement around key third party partnerships and external announcements/programs.
  • Partners with division HR on priority topics, especially related to employee culture and engagement objectives.
  • Partners closely with Global Information Services (GIS), Creative Network (Abbott's in-house creative and design agency) and other functions as needed to ensure resources are aligned in support of strategy, vision and plans.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities

The Senior Manager is a senior member of the division's Public Affairs function and reports to the Senior Director of Diagnostics Public Affairs. The Senior Manager will work closely with the Senior Director to manage budget and agency resources to further carry out responsibilities.

Position Accountability / Scope

The Senior Manager works closely with senior leaders of the Diagnostics senior leadership teams, Abbott's Global Marketing and External Affairs function (GMEA), HR, and IT, Quality, and Supply Chain, and Operations teams, among others.

The Senior Manager also leads efforts to better serve its diverse, worldwide employee base.

Many communications involve sensitive and complex topics pertaining to business, scientific, quality and regulatory topics that need to be conveyed to employees worldwide working in a variety of businesses and countries.

As it is increasingly more difficult to compete for employees' time, the person in this position is also charged with developing strategies to make internal and employee communications more competitive, engaging and social.

The Senior Manager may be expected to travel to multiple domestic and international commercial and manufacturing locations. Anticipated travel of 10-15%.

Qualifications

Minimum Education

A bachelor's degree is required, preferably in journalism, English, public relations, or another communications-related major.

Minimum Experience/Training Required

  • At least eight years of experience working in corporate (preferably global) or political, scientific, employee/internal, or regulatory communications.
  • Direct experience leading effective employee and executive communications is required, as well as working closely with senior executives on employee communications. Experience managing other aspects of corporate communications is a plus.
  • The candidate will be a sound strategic thinker with excellent judgment, have experience successfully navigating corporate environments, and with winning the support of others and building coalitions.
  • Strong people and project management skills, and being able to manage multiple projects and related deadlines and details with a consistent commitment to excellence and precision, are required.
  • The candidate must also have experience working effectively across a matrixed environment and reporting structure. Experience managing teams, portals, electronic communications, budgets, public relations agencies and internal services groups required.
  • The successful candidate will possess the maturity and executive presence to work comfortably and influentially with the company's senior management.
  • The person will also have very strong writing, editing and presentation-building skills.
  • The ability to communicate complex and sophisticated topics in a concise and understandable manner - whether from the company or directly from its executives - is a necessity.
