Job Description

You're a seasoned manager with experience leading both UX designers and content teams, who's created efficient processes that scale with quality and built strong relationships with stakeholders across the organization. You have a well-articulated vision for how content and design together can elevate the product experience, increase retention, and help users achieve their goals. You understand that today's enterprise products need to deliver value in minutes, not days or weeks. If this sounds like you—we want to hear from you!

Expel is hiring a senior manager to lead a team of UX designers and writers focused on the out-of-the-box experience and onboarding.

Part of your team is matrixed out to several cross-functional feature teams, each responsible for an aspect of the first-time user experience in our product. This pillar owns a critical part of the customer journey. Getting the UX and content right will have a significant impact on our business success and our customer happiness. You'll work closely with highly engaged leaders in product, support, engineering, and customer success and report to the UX director.

What Expel can do for you

Many companies promise UX a seat at the table, but Expel delivers. At Expel, UX isn't an afterthought, it's a critical differentiator with champions at the highest levels. No politics, no BS, just a team of exceptionally collaborative, dedicated professionals who want the best experience for our customers. Developing effective managers has been a key goal and differentiator since Expel's founding. That's one reason (of many!) we routinely make the top of the "best places to work" surveys.

We'll also:
  • Make sure you have the information, resources, and access you need to be effective in your role.
  • Provide hands-on monthly manager training covering topics like feedback, coaching, delegation, and hiring.
  • Give you a ton of support when the management job gets hard—like when you're coaching on performance, deciding about promotions, negotiating salaries, or helping someone on your team through a personal crisis.
  • Fund your and your team's professional development with a generous yearly conference and training budget.
  • Nurture your talent with a humane, collaborative team culture and a leadership team who've got your back.
What you can do for Expel
  • Drive alignment and vision for the out-of-the-box user experience and customer time-to-value.
  • Mature and scale the content function by building effective processes with cross-functional contributors that reduce overhead for the content team, while maintaining accuracy, timeliness, quality, and team morale.
  • Foster an environment of team cohesion, mutual support, inclusion, candor, and respect.
  • Work with UX and PM leadership to mature our practice by crafting standards, playbooks, documentation, and guidance—and hold your team accountable to those standards.
  • Evaluate our tooling, make technology recommendations, negotiate with vendors, and manage vendor relationships.
  • Communicate team successes and accomplishments within the product team and across the wider organization, and keep PM/UX leaders advised about project and personnel risks.
  • Understand and communicate to the team the needs of the key stakeholders and leaders across the product organization and how the team’s work connects to the company’s PKRs and product strategy.
  • Leverage your view across teams to see opportunities and risk, to coordinate work across teams, and create a unified experience for first-time and returning users.
What you should bring with you
  • Deep understanding of UX practices, methodologies, activities, research methods, and deliverables, as well as what goes into making complex ideas and workflows understandable using plain, straightforward, relatable language and guidance.
  • Strong operational chops, particularly in building effective cross-functional alignment, collaboration, and process.
  • Ability to create accountability through clear expectations and regular check-ins and feedback.
  • Ability to drive forward momentum and keep the team focused on achievable outcomes.
  • Comfort with ambiguity, and the ability to stay calm in a storm.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to different audiences using your strong summarization, presentation, and storytelling skills.
  • A high degree of self-awareness, initiative, and flexibility.
Education and experience
  • 8+ years designing for enterprise products or productivity software with technical or expert users—ideally, in one or more of the following: security products, SaaS onboarding, growth design, or platform design.
  • 3+ years experience managing UX designers and/or technical writers on a product team, working closely with front and back end engineers, product managers, and subject matter experts.
  • Familiar with content management systems, knowledge bases, support systems, Wikis, ticketing systems.
  • Experience creating and operationalizing standards, processes, or playbooks.
  • Familiar with dual-track agile and Lean UX methodology.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in the cybersecurity domain is preferred, but not required.
