The CloudAI & Advanced Systems Engineering (CAASE) is responsible for expanding Microsoft's Cloud Infrastructure to enable Microsoft's mission to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. The CAASE team is instrumental in delivering world class and innovative hardware at scale to ensure a high-quality experience to the millions of Microsoft Azure customers.

We are looking for a Senior Platform Power and Performance Engineer to join the team. As a Senior Platform Power and Performance Engineer , you will collaborate with several functional teams to deliver Microsoft Azure's cutting edge AI hardware and infrastructure . You will be leading the s ystem level power and performance validation , defining the KPIs (key performance indicators) for the platform, investigating new workloads and benchmarks, and influencing architecture decisions to deliver high quality solutions to the customers. This is an excellent opportunity to work on next generation architecture s and provide innovative solution s to customers.

Qualifications:

Required/Minimum Qualifications
  • 7+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience in power and performance design, validation, and optimization on SoCs, servers, storage, and/or network platforms.
  • SoC or embedded system architecture, design lifecycle , and tools experience.
  • Experience with hardware, firmware , & software (system & application stack) interfaces and understanding dependencies and impact to power and performance.
  • Experience with popular workload measurement methodologies including SPECcpu , Linpack , and Failure Intensity Objective (FIO) measurement technology.
  • Understanding of AI/ML workloads and how to validate software stacks, such as tensorflow .
Other Requirements
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirementsinclude, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Additional or Preferred Qualifications
  • 10+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years of technical engineering experience
    • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience.
  • Knowledge of high-volume server design and manufacturing is desired.
  • Knowledge of high-speed networking and system interconnect technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform in a high paced product development environment.
  • Demonstrated a bility to lead design, test , and debug complex hardware technologies for product development.
  • Knowledge about datacenters & operation s at scale.
  • Experience managing hardware programs through the entire product lifecycle .
Hardware Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with several cross functional teams across s ilicon, p latform, and c ustomer teams to build AI hardware solutions for Microsoft Azure's data center deployments .
  • Design and validate the power and performance of Microsoft's next generation hardware platforms, from silicon to data center cluster. Build validation plans and strategies to be executed by Microsoft's Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) and other third parties.
  • Develop guidelines and KPIs for system and solution power and performance. Collaborate with silicon, hardware design, and architecture teams to align on landing zone targets.
  • Investigate, analyze , and drive automation of new benchmarks and workloads to reflect customer use cases and scenarios.
  • Use statistical analysis methods to identify performance bottlenecks that may affect the platform's Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Identif y possible solutions to complex problems and drive to closure.
  • Provide technical leadership and collaborate across teams to come up with the best solution possible using the "One Microsoft" mindset.
