Senior Software Engineer (Full Stack), Search

OVERVIEW

About the Role 

We are looking for an experienced Senior Full Stack Engineer to join our team and help develop the future of Search, using a combination of frontend technologies, large language-backed systems, and a strong product sense. As part of this role, you will be responsible for the design and development of the most utilized surface in the app, leveraging cutting edge technologies in close collaboration with cross-functional partners on product, design, and machine learning.

About the Team

The Instacart App team focuses on the end customer, building technology and experiences to enrich their everyday lives and make the act of grocery shopping easier and more joyful. Within that space, the Search team is focused on the application of Information Retrieval and Large Language Models (LLMs) to transform the shopping experience and build out previously unimaginable features. Within Search, the LLM-focused Ask Instacart squad is currently operating as a tiger team to iterate quickly and bring these experiences from the lab to market.

ABOUT THE JOB

• Lead the technical aspects of software development projects, taking ownership of the entire software development lifecycle.
• Collaborate with product managers and other stakeholders to define project requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
• Architect, design, and develop scalable and robust full stack applications using cutting-edge technologies and best practices. Identify technical risks and develop mitigation strategies to ensure successful project delivery.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the development team, ensuring code quality, performance, and adherence to coding standards.
• Stay up to date with emerging technologies and industry trends, and assess their potential applications within our projects. Actively contribute to the development and enhancement of coding standards, development processes, and tools.

ABOUT YOU

Minimum Qualifications

• 6+ years of software development experience
• Proactive, motivated and self-driven.
• An ability to balance a sense of urgency with shipping high quality and pragmatic solutions
• Experience working with a large codebase on a cross functional team
• Solid expertise in web development technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, Vue.js).
• Proficiency in server-side technologies such as Ruby (on Rails), gRPC, Node.js, and Python
• Experience with relational and NoSQL databases, and the ability to design efficient database schemas.
• Strong analytical and debugging skills
• Effective communication and leadership skills, with the ability to collaborate and influence cross-functional teams.
• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Senior Full Stack Engineer, with a strong focus on both frontend and backend development, and a track record of successfully leading technical teams and projects.
• Experience building search or information discovery interfaces for web applications.
