Job Summary: The Senior Technical Designer is an all-around designer who is responsible for leading the design and creation of a variety of 2D and 3D projects. Technical designers are part programmer and part designer and are responsible for actually implementing the majority of the gameplay in projects. They are the middleman between the programming and design departments. Duties can include writing system specification documents, designing systems, writing scripts, mocking up user interfaces, menus, and gameplay examples. Senior Technical Designers can also implement level designs derived from instructional training lessons that depict scenarios and interactive events required for qualification and certification training. This position typically works under limited supervision and direction. Incumbents of this position will regularly exercise discretionary and substantial decision-making authority.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analyze, design, document, implement, maintain, adapt and modify source code, assets, and game engine scripts for a variety of 2D and 3D projects
  • Provide leadership to designers and other content developers, oversee planning and design documentation
  • Ensure a cohesive design between user interaction, game mechanics, and application goals
  • Work with content developers to ensure proper implementation according to system specifications
  • Revise and update assets for functional efficiency and optimization to create a high fidelity interactive environment
  • Create and revise scenario sequences related to simulation training lessons within design specifications
  • Analyze functional/performance specifications for products
  • Participate in the development of software requirements
  • Participate in relevant aspects of application design with engineers and program management
  • Coordinate with team engineers to ensure proper implementation of programs according to system specific specifications
  • Create and manage game content within budget and achieve performance requirements
  • Ensure configuration management is maintained for all content developer team work products
  • Participate in the review of work products for correctness, adherence to the design concept and to user standards, and for progress in accordance with schedules
  • Work with Quality Assurance to maintain standards and resolve issues that arise
  • Identify and resolve technical issues during development
  • Participate in general content integration and work with other developers to optimize integration processes
  • Respond to and resolve technical issues during development and participate in content integration efforts
  • Estimate and schedule work efforts for the team
  • Track tasks & issues and prioritize within a team to meet deadlines
  • Work within deadline and budgetary constraints
  • Incorporate new technologies into products and development pipelines as directed

Minimum Job Requirements:

Two year college degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Digital Media, Game Art &Design, or Game Programming and six years experience in video game development. Must have experience as a team member on two or more full software life cycles, from concept to ship. Must have demonstrable ability to mentor junior designers. Must have experience designing 3D game levels. Must have the ability to design complex mockups and layouts to present design vision. Must have expert level presentation and communication skills including being able to present to all levels of employee, including upper management. Expert proficiency using 3D level editors. Expert proficiency using Lua or similar scripting language. Expert knowledge of game asset pipelines. Significant experience using Unreal, Unity and other competitive gaming engines. Ability to perform technical writing in order to describe software requirements and design specifications, including diagrams is required. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required. Good interpersonal and team-oriented skills are required. Must have ability to collaborate with artists and engineers on design issues. Must be flexible and able to adapt to quickly changing circumstances and work priorities in a timely manner. Must have demonstrable ability to understand abstract concepts in order to apply solutions to real training needs and requirements. Experience preferred the following areas: game programming, scripting (AI, assets, particles, scenarios, etc.) level design, scenario creation, and/or animation. Familiarity with Agile or other iterative software development methods and work processes is desired. Experience with Flash, Photoshop and Illustrator is helpful. Must be able to obtain a Security Clearance.
