About the jobThis position is needed to evolve Twilio Voice’s Elastic SIP Trunking product to the next level by leveraging cutting edge technologies to build and deploy software in a massively distributed environment with low latency, high availability, and at a global scale.
As a Software Engineer, you will partner with the product managers, designers, architects and other engineers in the Voice team to build and maintain PSTN Connectivity and other networking products that solve real world customer problems.
ResponsibilitiesIn this role, you’ll:
- Develop horizontally-scalable, resilient, high availability and performing-under-load distributed systems in a production environment.Â
- Own, operate, and maintain your team’s services in a production environment. Make DevOps a primary concern to ensure services are reliable, scalable, manageable and supportable.
- Raise the bar on team performance. Enable feature velocity while maintaining quality by writing unit, functional, load and performance tests.
- Contribute to the product roadmap for Twilio Voice, including continuous evaluation of industry standards, techniques, tools and trends. Ensure Twilio develops and maintains an industry competitive advantage.
- Excel as an engineer and be a productive member of the team where leadership is a behavioral trait, not a title.

Required:
- Minimum 6+ years of hands-on experience building software in a large scale, distributed applications environment
- Strong distributed systems knowledge and understands various tradeoffs of building systems at scale
- Able to demonstrate proficiency in a JVM based language (Java preferred), web stack and framework
- Experience scaling data tiers employing a variety of SQL/NoSQL database and caching technologies
- Strong Computer Science fundamentals not limited to data structures, algorithms, operating systems, and distributed systems
- Able to work well in a team setting with excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Well-versed in agile processes, continuous integration and test automation.
Desired:
- Experience operating systems at scale in mission critical environment
- Experience with and/or knowledge of IP networking and application-level protocols, including an understanding of end-end networks and factors affecting performance.Â
- Hands-on experience with cloud technologies such as Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud or Azure.Â

This position is a remote role but is not eligible to be hired in San Francisco, CA, Oakland, CA, San Jose, CA, or the surrounding areas.

*Please note this role is open to candidates outside of Colorado, California, New York, and Washington. The information below is provided for candidates hired in those locations only.
The estimated pay ranges for this role are as follows:
- Based in Colorado: $160,080 - $200,100.
- Based in New York or Washington State: $169,520 - $211,900.
- Based in the San Francisco Bay area, California: $188,320 - $235,400.
- This role is eligible to participate in Twilio's equity plan and the following benefits: health care insurance, 401(k) retirement account, paid sick time, paid personal time off, paid parental leave.Â
The successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as skills, experience, and geographic location within the state.
