Job Description
Harmonic is using data and AI to map the world of startups. When companies are first formed, they’re invisible to the world. We’ve created the only complete startup database, enabling the right investments to reach the right entrepreneurs at the right moment. We cover founders who’ve just filed for incorporation to scaleups hiring their go-public CFO, all in real-time with rich firmographic, team info, and time-series data.
Hundreds of venture teams have become data-driven and deployed their dollars more effectively thanks to Harmonic. Firms like Accel, NEA, Brex, Notion, and Google Ventures use Harmonic to connect startups with the capital and resources they need to drive growth. We’re backed by some of the best investors - Craft, Sozo, Floodgate, and several others, all of whom started as customers first.
We believe your ability to pick up new skills, excitement for personal growth, and passion for professional development are more important than where you are today. We invite you to reach out if you’re driven, curious, optimistic, and passionate about mastering your craft!
The role
Before reading further, take a look at our cultural values and see if they resonate with you!
We are looking for an engineer to join our team and help us unlock the full potential of our most critical asset: our data. You will have a direct impact on our revenue by delivering value to our customers by ensuring that our systems can handle the complex relationship between our entities.
You will be responsible for scaling our knowledge graph infrastructure and managing our time series data. You will also evaluate and improve our data storage and taxonomy systems, and mentor and manage other engineers on the team.
We are looking for someone who is constantly looking for ways to increase the effectiveness of the team through the use of technology, and who shares our values of being low ego, obsessed, curious, and collaborative. If this sounds like you, we would love to hear from you!
What we value:
- Being customer-obsessed: At the start of each two-week sprint, we commit to our deliverables, focusing on customer impact and fulfilling commitments. Expect an environment of high personal accountability.
- Continuous self-improvement: We prioritize growth and feedback, celebrating wins & achievements while focusing on how we can strive to be even better next time. We exchange regular feedback and hold quarterly sessions to discuss each other's strengths and areas for growth, driving our development. We index heavily on introspection, openness to feedback, and direct communication.
- “Get shit done” attitudes: Even when things are uncertain, all of our team members excel at pushing projects ahead, asking the right questions, and overcoming obstacles to keep things moving. You understand the importance of balancing speed and quality, and you excel at communicating what can be realistically achieved given the circumstances.
Who you are:
- Inquisitive: What kind of topics pique your interest? What keeps you up late at night? What kind of problems do you like to solve?
- Accountable: Do you take psychological ownership of your work? What are your action steps when things don’t go according to plan? Can we count on your word?
- Engaged: How active are you in accomplishing your personal and professional goals? Are you proactive about identifying roadblocks? What do you do when you see something that isn’t working?
If you are curious about the team, here’s more information:
- Explore Working with Sang to understand decision-making processes related to the engineering function.
- Explore Team Page to get acquainted with us. We're an exceptionally collaborative and engaged group, deeply committed to our shared cultural values.
What we are looking for:
We're seeking a front-end technical lead who champions exceptional application experiences. Reporting directly to the Head of Engineering, you'll take full ownership of our front-end technical direction, owning strategic decisions that will influence our front-end engineering efforts at the company level.
Specifically, you will:
- Take ownership of technical decisions in ambiguous circumstances with the conviction, strength, and presence of a respected leader.
- Present and explain to the team near-term and long-term risk assessments that outline the full scope of potential ramifications.
- Dive headfirst into troubleshooting, and quickly become a net benefit to the team, helping to alleviate bandwidth.
- Be pre-emptive about pitfalls, pull our roadmap forward, and enable engineers to execute more quickly.
- After 30 days, gain situational awareness of the technical challenges that are preventing us from advancing in our project plans. Specificity, descriptiveness, and a solution-oriented mindset are key.
- After 60 days, begin executing those solutions regardless of resource availability so that the team is making demonstrably improved progress.
- After 90 days, provide the Head of Engineering with a full picture of our product roadmap, along with detailed recommendations concerning potential blockers.
Role requirements:
- 7+ years of experience as a software engineer, focusing primarily on front-end development.
- Thrive in fast-paced startup environments where change is constant.
- Comfortable with a hybrid work setup, requiring office presence at least 3 times/week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays) in LA, the Bay Area (San Mateo), or NYC.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams through infrastructure challenges and migrations.
- Skilled in influencing a team of engineers, and providing guidance and feedback effectively.
- Experience with consumer-facing products, understanding user needs and preferences.
Plus if…
- You have experience with discovery systems, search use cases, recommendation systems (CRM, ATS, etc.), or anything that helps index, document, and make data available for use.
- A background in Machine Learning, AI, or anything that provides an enhanced search experience.
Pay
$220k - $250K Salary + Equity (flexible depending on the level)
The Process
Our goal in hiring is to make sure we click on both sides. We’re all about saving time and not beating around the bush. If it’s not looking like a match, we’re upfront and quick to say so, keeping things honest and moving smoothly for everyone involved.
Our interview process is optimized for pragmatism. In lieu of a typical software engineering interview process, with data structure and algorithm whiteboard questions, expect us to ask questions and collaborate with you in a way closely aligned with the work we expect you to do.
- 🩺 Top of the line health, dental and vision insurance, with 100% premium covered
- 📈 401k matching
- 🌴 Unlimited vacation and sick leave
- 🌍 Offices in NYC, SF, & LA
