As the pioneer of Buy Now, Pay Later solutions, Affirm is building the first payment platform with a consumer-first mindset.
The Communications Engineering team owns a critical part of Affirm's backend with our messaging platform processing billions of emails, SMS and Push Notifications with strict SLAs and delivery requirements.
Engineers on the team have the opportunity to expand the reach of Affirm's global payment platform, design and implement new APIs and capabilities, and deliver services with best-in-class reliability, latency and performance.
We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer who can help us build scalable backend services and data pipelines to power transactional and marketing communications to our global users. We're part of Affirm's rapidly growing Growth Engineering team responsible for driving user growth. We do this by improving our product, user experiences, and Affirm's underlying technologies via a broad variety of data and metrics driven projects in close collaboration with Product, analytics, user research, marketing, and other engineering teams.
What You'll Do
  • Build and maintain mission critical services, tooling and data pipelines that deliver effective, compliant transactional and engagement messages to our customers
  • Closely collaborate with product, engineering, UX, analytics and marketing stakeholders to gather requirements and deliver scalable solutions with dependencies across multiple teams
  • Drive project planning, system design, cross-functional alignment, in addition to delivery, monitoring, and continuous iteration
  • Consistently generate simple and elegant designs, write high-quality, testable, peer-reviewed code which will be a model for the team
  • Lead efforts to help shape the future technical direction of the team
  • Adhere to and advocate for engineering best practices across the team, such as robust automated testing and observability
  • Provide mentorship to other engineers and model our strong team culture of transparency, continuous improvement , collaboration, blameless retrospectives and inclusion

What We Look For
  • You have a strong technical background with 8+ years of software engineering experience shipping production-quality code for systems at scale
  • You have served as the technical lead of large complex projects that span multiple teams and functions
  • You have strong collaboration, written and verbal communication abilities in a remote first work setting
  • You are a humble team-player who places the needs of others first and participates in the development of peers to scale their impact
  • You have an interest in payments and ecommerce business models and metrics
  • You have the ability to understand complex consumer finance problems and to design simple, high-quality technical solutions that work for our users and the business
  • Preferred, but not required: Experience with growth engineering

The majority of our roles are remote and can be located anywhere in the U.S. and Canada (with the exception of the U.S. Territories, Quebec, Yukon, Nunavut, and the Northwest Territories) unless the job indicates a different global location. We are currently building operations in Spain, Poland, and Australia. Employees in remote roles have the option of working remotely or from an Affirm office in their country of hire, and may occasionally travel to an Affirm office or elsewhere for required meetings or team-building events. Our offices in Chicago, New York, Pittsburgh, Salt Lake City, San Francisco and Toronto will remain operational and accessible for anyone to use on a voluntary basis, subject to local COVID-19 guidelines.
All full-time jobs at Affirm (excluding interns and apprentices) are tied to a transparent grade-based pay range taking location into account.
