The Opportunity

We are seeking a dedicated Strategy Engagement Director to join our Enterprise Strategy team.

This position is a hybrid work type and can be based in one of the following locations: San Antonio, TX or Charlotte, NC. Hybrid roles help employees gain the best of both worlds - collaborating in-person in the office and working from home when needed to achieve focused results.

The Enterprise Strategy team supports decision making by USAA's leadership on high-level strategy questions that shape the future of the organization and how we fulfill our mission. The team's work covers both strategic planning and targeted strategy engagements on high-impact topics.

This role utilizes expertise, industry experience, analysis and innovation to provide insights that shape growth and strategic solutions. It develops strategy recommendations to internal clients using both internal frameworks and external strategic competitive benchmarks. It also develops fact bases, articulates hypotheses and underlying assertions. Additionally, it leverages strategic analytics, executes strategic work plans and go-to-market solutions, delivers final outcomes, recommendations, and action plans for the client. Effectively collaborates with LOB/Staff area initiative champions and key stakeholders to maximize likelihood and success of execution and organizational impact of the strategy.

What you'll do:

  • Identifies and manages existing and emerging risks that stem from business activities and the job role.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled.
  • Follows written risk and compliance policies and procedures for business activities.
  • Leads definition and decomposition of problem statement into key hypotheses, assertions and key work streams working backwards from where the leverage is thought to be. Assembles key participants and facilitates cross-functional teams in the strategy development.
  • Leads highly complex strategy initiatives typically requiring confidentiality and enterprise-level visibility.
  • Assists Leadership to facilitate scoping/framing/shaping sessions. Works closely with teams and resources to achieve milestones within established timeframes.
  • Leads and/or oversees analytic work streams, partnering with key teams to uncover and interpret strategic insights.
  • Continuously leverages expert data-driven problem-solving techniques and analytical rigor, to manipulate, interpret, and study competitive intelligence and business data to translate into insights for strategy development. Leverages data assets, competitive intelligence, consumer/segment intelligence, economic/financial intelligence, and market trends to drive insights, hypotheses validation or refinement, and ultimately the answer to the case.
  • Actively manages ambiguity and consistently seeks to drive clarity amongst team, partners and key stakeholders.
  • Proactively communicates high quality updates to key stakeholders, to include senior level executive stakeholders.
  • Collaborates with key stakeholders and LOB leaders to deliver written and verbal recommendations to senior executives that provide clear guidance on strategy timeline, and owners' required investments to enable expected results.
  • Mentors members of the team.

What you have:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a Business, Engineering or Science discipline OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree (12 years of experience without degree).
  • 8 years of business experience demonstrating proficiency in technical consulting skills; or an Advanced Degree in Business or STEM and 6 years business experience demonstrating proficiency in technical consulting skills.
  • Proven track record in project execution environment.
  • Proven track record influencing business decisions.
  • Subject Matter Expert with Technical Consulting Skills: Hypothesis-driven problem solving; Primary Market research (e.g. interviews); Secondary Market research (e.g. desk research); Data analysis (e.g. what-if, sensitivity, etc.); Synthesis (e.g. so what?); Pyramid Principle / Story Telling; Written Communications; Visual display of quantitative information; PowerPoint / Excel; Presentation skills; Meeting Leadership; Verbal Communications; Teaming; Project Planning.

What sets you apart:

  • 2 or more years of experience working as a strategy consultant at a top-tier strategy consulting firm or in a similar role within a corporate strategy team at a large corporation.
  • US military experience through military service or a military spouse/domestic partner.
  • MBA or equivalent advanced degree.

What we offer:

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. The salary range for this position is: $132,500 - $253,220.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
