About the Position: This position is located at Fort Polk, Louisiana. The surrounding community is comprised of the towns of Leesville, DeRidder, New Llano, & Anacoco. The nearest cities are Alexandria & Lake Charles. The area is considered rural with the Kisatchie National Forest, which offers hunting and recreational activities, located nearby such as Toledo Bend Lake, Vernon Lake & Anacoco Lake for those interested in fishing, boating, swimming, etc. https://home.army.mil/polk/index.php

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires a T-1 background investigation.
  • This position is covered by Civilian Drug Abuse Testing Program. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R, condition of employment for certain civilian positions identified as critical under the Drug Abuse Testing Program.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical.
  • This position requires a valid stateside driver's license.
  • This position requires occasional business travel/TDY up to 5% of the time.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 70 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.



Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Target Systems Mechanic Worker without more than normal supervision. Applicants must meet this Screen Out Element to be considered further. Applicants should document experience in work that involves the ability to perform common mechanic worker tasks; operating a motor vehicle to transport Moving Target Carriers to designated ranges working under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Ability To Do The Work Of The position Without More Than Normal Supervision
  • Physical Effort: Frequently lifts and carries tools, equipment and parts weighing up to 70 pounds. Occasionally lifts up to 100 pounds or over with assistance. The work requires bending, stooping, and working in cramped positions.
  • Working Conditions: Works with electrical power supplies from I2 volt dc, 120 vat to 480 vat, 3 phase high voltage current. Exposed to electrical shock which may cause death or serious injury. Works inside and outside during all types of weather conditions. Stands on concrete floors and works on ranges in rough terrain. Exposed to dangers of live fire ranges, pyrotechnics, laser frequencies and explosives. May be exposed to sulfuric acid when handling batteries used in operation remotely controlled target devices. Is exposed to the possibility of abrasions, explosive charges equivalent to l/4 pound charge of TNT. Hearing protective devices are issued or available for use.
