Job Description
JOB FUNCTION / SUMMARY:
The Business Intelligence Architect is responsible for the assessment of business requirements that meet the reporting and analytical needs of our internal customers. Additional responsibilities include collection and identification of technical specifications and the subsequent development of viable solutions that support the mission of Information Services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Demonstrated ability to deliver solutions (i.e., purchased applications, developed applications, workflow systems, and specific LOB applications) based on customer requirements.
- Developing technology specifications and ensuring that new solutions are designed for optimal usefulness while leveraging existing technologies when possible.
- Applying architectural concepts to design solutions that meet operational requirements, such as, scalability, maintainability, security, flexibility, and availability.
- Identifying the technologies to utilize based on cost, performance, existing service agreements, and organizational constraints.
- Ability to present high-level ideas clearly and concisely.
- Proven experience developing and delivering dashboards and scorecards.
- Familiarity with data visualization concepts.
- Liaison between lines of business and I.T. for data, reporting, and analytical needs.
- Coordinates deployment of reporting solutions.
- Experience in working with small to large size projects and completes tasks on time with a high level of precision.
- Understands and has worked with OLAP solutions, preferably using SQL Server Analysis Services.
- Troubleshoot and optimize simple existing SQL queries (preferred).
- Recommends and implements process improvements.
- Maintains knowledge of current BI tools, methods, and best practices.
- Acts as an internal data consultant providing technical guidance on business systems projects.
- Determines and resolves problems with other systems analysts, programmers, and systems users.
- Maintains, develops, modifies, and documents processes according to general specifications and guidelines.
- Develops common reporting solutions to be used enterprise-wide.
- Develops reporting solutions for user groups when they are unable to design for themselves due to the complexity of the data or reporting needs.
- Provides help and support to the user groups when they have questions regarding the reporting tools and solutions.
- Provides assistance to our team and other IT teams as needed for projects.
- Secondary Duties:
- Develops accurate and easy-to-follow data dictionaries for the benefit of power users.
- Ensures codes and values are updated in the data dictionary as they are changed.
- Assist in the development of instructor-led user training class and creates new class labs as new technology becomes available.
- Meets with the other Business Intelligence Architects to identify needs of specific articles coming from their assigned teams or projects.
- Develop accurate and easy-to-follow written procedures for reporting applications that empower users to fully utilize the capabilities of delivered solutions.
- Update existing knowledge base articles as technology or procedures change.
- Support the internal SharePoint portal in terms of look and feel and assigned content and educate users on processes.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
MINIMUM REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE:
- Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years of related experience and/or training and experience with a developed expertise in business intelligence delivery
- Prefer a BS in Computer Science, Management Information Systems or similar degree, or a MBA.
- Experience using Microsoft Office products including: Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Access, Visio, MS Project and Power BI
- Highly skilled in Microsoft Excel 2010, preferably with PowerPivot and Pivot Tables in general
- Moderate to advanced TSQL development (desired)
- Ability to learn or knowledge of (highly desirable): MS Reporting Services, Report Builder 3.0, MS Analysis Services, Multidimensional Expressions (MDX), DAX (PowerPivot), OLAP, MS Power View, KPIs, PerformancePoint, SharePoint administration.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing using the English language
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public
- Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry
- Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
- No certifications, licenses, or registrations are required to successfully perform this job
ESSENTIAL MENTAL & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to work under stress and meet deadlines
- Ability to operate related equipment to perform the essential job functions
- Ability to read and interpret a document if required to perform the essential job functions
- Ability to travel if required to perform the essential job functions
- Ability to lift/move/carry approximately 10 pounds if required to perform the essential job functions. If the employee is unable to lift/move/carry this weight and can be accommodated without causing the department/division an "undue hardship" then the employee must be accommodated; hence omitting lifting/moving/carrying as a physical requirement.
