Basic Function

The Legal Business Operations Director leads the business operations team for the Legal Department. This person works closely with Legal department leadership to manage the financial, technological, and business processes of the group. The primary responsibilities include proactively translating department strategies and goals into efficient cost-effective systems, processes, and technology plans, including reporting and benchmarking, to support a world-class department. This requires close cooperation with the department leadership and other business functions, such as Finance and IT, to adeptly move to projects from idea to completion.

Roles & Responsibilities

• Manage the legal operations team of skilled professionals.
• Develop strategic plans and associated programs and systems for the Legal Operations function to help drive the department long-term strategy, goals, priorities, and alignment.
• Continuously improve Legal department performance by developing, maintaining, and enhancing programs for identifying productivity improvement opportunities, automated workflows, knowledge management, and training.
• Own the department technology systems, such as those for matter management, e-billing, knowledge management, CLM, workflow automation, and the like. Maintain the process improvement and technology roadmap and work closely with IT, ensuring sufficient resources are applied for departmental needs.
• Use performance metrics, dashboards, and peer benchmarking to measure and report department performance. Ensure seamless access to departmental institutional knowledge. Prepare analyses, reports, and presentations, as needed, for management.
• Lead department projects and change management activities relating to operations.
• Working with Finance and department management, lead budget and annual planning, expense management efforts, and reporting on costs, savings, and trends. Design systems for legal case and budget management and expense compliance.
• Interface with outside counsel and other third-party providers on retention agreements, fee arrangements, and matter budgets.

Min. Qualifications

• Eight years in a legal operations (or related) role. Experience in business and finance operations or attorneys also considered.
• BS/BA/BBA Degree is required. MBA or Law Degree is beneficial.
• Extremely comfortable with technology and excellent knowledge of IT systems. Able to play a leading role in selecting, configuring, testing, maintaining, and explaining technology solutions.
• Knowledge of legal and business processes, implementation of technology solutions, and best practices in matter management, electronic billing, and document management preferred.
• Knowledge of the procurement of legal services also preferred.
• Experience with analytics.
• Knowledge of corporate finance and budget management.
• Exceptional project planning and management skills.
• Self-starter who will continuously look for opportunities to improve processes.
• Strong leadership, managerial and interpersonal skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
