THE OPPORTUNITY
The job of Consultant, Registered Nurse is done for the purpose of planning, implementing, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating health services at Why Not You Academy; providing leadership, technical assistance and partnerships to enhance student health and safety and ensure equitable education opportunities and academic outcomes.
This job reports to the WNYA Director of Operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Provides mandated annual staff health training for the purpose of meeting health and safety needs of children and ensuring compliance with established regulation and program standards.
• Assesses and plans for the health care needs of students with acute and chronic health conditions, writes care plans in collaboration with the health care team: parents/guardians, Health Care Providers (HCP), and appropriate school staff for the purpose of meeting student health and safety needs.
• Provides consultant services to school personnel regarding health issues, e.g., communicable disease control, Immunization compliance for the purpose of meeting legal requirements and school health and safety
• Compiles data from a wide variety of sources for the purpose of guiding program development and improvement, establishing differentiated site support approach, and coordinating school activities that meet the needs of students.
• Assesses the physical and emotional health of students as related to the educational process and within the scope of school nurse practice; initiates referrals for further diagnosis & treatment of identified health needs and provides follow-up; communicates health concerns that may impact learning to appropriate staff with parent and/or student consent for the purpose of supporting student health and academic achievement.
• Delegates and supervises health procedures and medication administration to unlicensed assistive personnel staff for the purpose of meeting health and safety needs of children and ensuring compliance with established regulation and program standards.
• Coordinates and implements health screenings mandated by law, including referral and follow-up for the purpose of supporting student academic achievement and well-being.
• May provide health counseling and crisis intervention to students; serves as an advocate for the health rights of students and as a professional liaison between the school, family and health community for the purpose of supporting student social and emotional well-being.
• Performs professional nursing tasks as indicated and assigned, including emergency services when on site for the purpose of meeting student health and safety needs.
• Serves as a resource for health education to classroom teacher as time allows for the purpose of meeting student health and safety needs.
• Cooperates with administrators and other staff to identify school safety and environmental health needs for the purpose of meeting student health and safety needs.
• Embodies the principles and practices that form our culture and commitment to becoming an Antiracist Multicultural Organization for the purpose of meeting the Agency’s END: Success for Each Child and Eliminating the Opportunity Gap by Leading with Racial Equity.
• Participates in monitoring activities (e.g. visiting sites, conducting observations, writing reports, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with federal and/or state regulations and requirements and Puget Sound ESD policies and procedures.
• Prepares, processes and maintains a variety of written materials and documents (e.g. reports, memos, letters, health plans, assessments, evaluations, informational materials, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, conveying information, and for compliance with ESD, state, federal, and local regulations and/or grant requirements.
• Provides ongoing support, resources, training, clinical technical assistance, and nursing consultation to school staff (e.g. immunization compliance, communicable disease, nutrition, emergency preparedness, environment, and appropriate health and illness policies, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring student health and safety, recommending policies and procedures, and disseminating information.
OTHER FUNCTIONS
• Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.

RESPONSIBILITY
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to impact the organization’s services.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 50% sitting, 25% walking, and 25% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and in a generally hazard free environment.
