About the role

Join us as part of a team working across a range of surgical specialties and subspecialties in Dunedin City, home to Otago Medical School and the lively University of Otago. Here you will be exposed to several runs which include tertiary level caseloads.

This role:

  • gives the opportunity to provide healthcare to a large geographical area, ensuring your exposure to a wide range of work
  • has great support for educational needs, including weekly teaching, case discussions, journal clubs, and peer review sessions.
  • is in a department that has a strong academic presence, opportunities for successful candidates will be far and wide, and will involve the ability to undertake research as part of training.

Rotations include the following:

  • General Surgery
  • Colorectal
  • Hepatobiliary, Pancreatic and Oesophagogastric Surgery
  • Acute Surgical
  • Vascular Surgery
  • Breast Surgery
  • Plastics
  • Urology
  • Neurosurgery

There is also the likelihood of rotations to Cardiothoracic Surgery (one Registrar every six months) with the possibility of ICU (one Registrar every six months) depending on availability.

We have a unionised after-hours roster in place, with 21 Registrars on the rotation. The runs available will depend on the start date of the successful candidate.

About you

Our ideal candidate will have registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand or be eligible for general or provisional general registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. You can check your eligibility for registration by visiting the Council's website at MCNZ.

We are interested in hearing from RMOs with an interest in surgery looking to pursue a surgical career or wanting some surgical experience to contribute to their career aspirations. Our surgical RMO management work closely with Registrars to achieve career goals.

It is requirement of the Medical Council of New Zealand that your qualifications are approved through EPIC. If you have a commitment to working in New Zealand, it is highly recommended that you start this process as soon as possible to allow your subsequent registration to be undertaken in a timely fashion.
