Summary This position is located in the Small Business Administration, Birmingham Disaster Loan Service Center in Dallas, TX. The incumbent serves as a Loan Specialist in one of the Birmingham Disaster Loan Center and is responsible for performing servicing, purchase, or liquidation activities. Learn more about this agency Duties As a Loan Specialist (Commercial) at theGS-1165-12, some of your typical work assignments may include: Performs a variety of tasks for servicing, purchasing and liquidating loans. Reviews assigned loan file to become acquainted with the characteristic requirements, collateral, and terms of the loan. Gathers and reviews facts and data relating to the loan balance, lien situations, collateral, interest of other creditors, and any assets of the borrower which may provide recovery to the Agency. Contacts lenders/Certified Development Companies (CDC's) to discuss the business, the loan situation and explore all available alternatives. Gathers information from borrowers, major creditors, and legal representatives to make recommendations to maximize recovery to the Agency and minimize loss to the obligor(s). Analyzes potential "work-outs" in common situations and develops recommendations for standard plans for repayment of the debt through restructured amortization, extended maturities, etc. Requirements Conditions of employment You must be a U.S. Citizen You must successfully complete a background investigation. Qualifications GS-12: One year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, obtained in either the private or public sector: performing servicing, purchasing, and/or liquidation of consumer and commercial loans; and analyzing and identifying financial management problems and recommending appropriate action; and gathers and reviews borrowers data (i.e., loan balances, liens, collateral, assets) to determine potential recovery efforts; and negotiates compromises in situations where settlement for less than the amount due is in the best interest of the government. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Generally, time in Non-Pay status as a federal employee is not creditable towards the specialized experience requirement listed above. All qualification requirements must be met by 11:59 pm (Eastern Time) on 05/29/2026. Additional information This is a bargaining unit position with AFGE Local 228.
