Summary About the Position: This position is with the Defense Health Agency at the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center in Fort Hood, Texas. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized Student Loan Repayment may be authorized Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service Learn more about this agency Duties Provide health education and counseling to a variety of clients in areas such as tobacco cessation, nutrition, weight control, stress management, self-care, accident prevention, exercise, hypertension, and communicable diseases. Review existing written/audio-visual materials or develop new materials; prepare supplemental instructional materials; and prepare after action reports according to established procedure. Serve as liaison to unit commanders and family support groups for the provision of health education and health promotion services; and schedule classes and counseling sessions with activities and participants. Assist in assessing health education needs of the community through the use of surveys, interviews, or questionnaires; and extract and assemble data for reports. Coordinate and conduct community health fairs and health initiatives. Develop and maintain computerized databases; and track participants via phone or mail that have completed various programs in order to evaluate success rates. Perform quality assurance checks on all health screening equipment; restock required supplies; and clean, wash, and disinfect equipment. When not performing health promotion duties, serve as a medical support assistant performing duties such as receiving incoming correspondence, screening patients for treatment eligibility, and contacting clients regarding appointments. Requirements Conditions of employment Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. A Personnel Security Investigation is required. A pre-placement medical examination is required. Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption. Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position. This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to pre-employment screening and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to consent to participation in random drug urinalysis testing. Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS. This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis. This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules. This position may include shift work (evenings, weekends, holidays). Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Basic Requirement for Health Promotion Technician (Office Automation): Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes educating patients on health promotion topics. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Education This job does not have an education qualification requirement. Additional information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. This position requires a 1 year probationary period during which the agency evaluates your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest.
