Summary
This position, located at the OKC VA HCS, Pathology and Laboratory Service, serves as a Health Technician, responsible for performing a wide range of administrative functions, to include regulatory compliance for laboratory testing, clerical and other health technician functions.

Duties
Major duties of this position include but are not limited to...
Adjust equipment of laboratory testing and set up all necessary accessories and supplies regarding laboratory testing
Responsible for all point of care laboratory testing
Ensures quality control materials are run and acceptable daily or as required by regulations
Responsible for maintaining all records for lab certification, point of care testing and maintenance on laboratory machines, assigning proficiency tests and monitor all survey results
Collects, labels, processes, stores, and either ships or delivers specimens that require reference lab testing
Monitors and documents temperature and humidity of room and equipment, refrigerator instruments, etc.
Performs daily and monthly maintenance as required; documents such appropriately
Ensures work efficiency; keeps work area neat, tidy and meets all regulatory requirements for sanitation required for laboratory certification
Work Schedule: 7:00am - 3:30pm, Rotating weekends and holidays

To be considered for this position, you must complete all required steps in the process. In addition to the application and questionnaire, this position requires an online assessment. The online assessment measures critical general competencies required to perform the job.
All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA.

Physical Requirements: The work requires much walking through the clinic, with occasional requirements to lift objects, computer work and operating office equipment; requires the ability to physically control or defend against emotionally distressed patients; requires above average agility and dexterity due to the fine skills of some of the point of care lab testing; work may require heavy lifting of equipment or patients

Qualifications

Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR).
This position has the following Individual Occupational Requirement: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade of GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to...
Knowledge of management's objectives, goals, decisions and policies
Knowledge of clinic organization, functions, specialties and programs, such as social work, nursing laboratory, supply business offices function, etc.
Comprehensive working knowledge of applicable public laws, VA policy and regulations
Knowledge of medical and administrative records systems, Privacy Act and Freedom of Information Act and HIPPA as it relates to release of information on patients and protecting the privacy of patient information
In-depth knowledge of College of American Pathology regulations on proficiency testing
Ability to interpret rules, regulations, policies and procedures to make sound decisions using good judgment
Ability to deal with a variety of individuals with tact and diplomacy
Ability to complete assigned projects, studies, narrative and statistical reports and reviews in a thorough, accurate and timely manner
Skill and precision in the use of the tools, materials and specialized laboratory equipment
Knowledge of critical lab values and the procedure for documentation of follow-up care

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
