Summary
These positions are located in National Park of American Samoa, within the Facilities Division.
The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period is August, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated entry-on-duty: August, 2026.

Duties
As a Maintenance Worker, you will perform the following duties:
Vegetation control - uses hand and power equipment to facilitate trimming, cutting, and removing various vegetation that has encroached on park infrastructure, buildings, parking areas, and trails.
Trail maintenance - often in remote areas, requires hiking up to 4 miles each way, and using hand tools such as picks and shovels to maintain a safe and accessible trail.
Custodial and trash collection. The maintenance worker regularly patrols the park collecting trash from various trailheads, and visitor use areas.
WG-5 only: Chainsaw and Power Equipment operation to complete trail work and/or vegetation work.
WG-5 only: Operates light trucks/ATVs to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work sites while assisting on project work.
Physical Demands:
WG-04 - The incumbent may lift, carry, set up and handle tools, parts, equipment and materials that weigh up to or over 50 pounds unassisted. May work from ladders, platforms, scaffolds and perform work or repairs in hard-to-reach places and positions. Requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling and climbing in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Required to operate standard hand and power tools.
WG-05 - Works from ladders, scaffolds and platforms and where surfaces to be coated, or the parts of systems worked on are hard to reach that require incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 40 pounds.
Working Conditions:
WG-04 - Work is performed both inside and outside. Incumbent is subject to climatic extremes in all weather conditions. Work conditions may be dusty, greasy and noisy. There is exposure to fumes and the possibility of electric shock, bruises, burns, scrapes and cuts. The work requires frequent special care to avoid injuries. To reduce the dangers, the incumbent is required to follow prescribed safety practices such as wearing specified trades and craft protection clothing (i.e., hard-hats, gloves, safety shoes and glasses, ear plugs, respirators and rain gear).
WG-05 - Work is performed inside and outside where dirt, spray, and fumes are present. Also required to work in inclement weather and/or wear protective equipment and clothing that are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.

Must provide proof of residency that you live in a village on the island of Tutuila, American Samoa.
Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
WG-04: You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
WG-05 : You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
WG-05: You may be required to complete training and operate a four-wheel drive vehicle.
You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program.

At the WG-4 level, the Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT) includes the following: Performing elementary carpentry repairs using simple measures and hand tools. Performing simple plumbing duties such as replacing toilet seats, installing soap and paper towel dispensers, unplugging sinks and toilets using a plunger, and tightening simple connections to stop leaks. Custodial duties and trash collection. General landscaping and grounds maintenance such as cutting grass with push/riding mowers, assisting with vegetation control such as trimming, cutting, and removing various vegetation that has encroached on park infrastructure, buildings, parking areas, and trails.
At the WG-5 level the Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT) includes the following: Performing simple and routine maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, equipment and related utilities including minor carpentry repairs, painting, and minor plumbing repairs. Operating a light truck to pick up supplies and to transport materials to and from work. Cleaning and servicing chemical toilets, restrooms, and other visitor facilities. Has the knowledge, skills, and abilities to operate chainsaws in accordance with safety policies and practices.

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.

This position will be filled under the Field Unit Local Hiring Authority. Eligibility is limited to applicants who reside within the defined local commuting area at the time of application. For this announcement, the local commuting area is the area from which individuals can reasonably commute to the duty station under normal conditions. The defined vicinity for this position is: Any village on the island of Tutuila (American Samoa). Residency will be verified during the hiring process.
A selectee receiving a first appointment to the Federal Government (Civil Service) is entitled only to the lowest step of the grade for which selected the display of a salary range on this vacancy shall not be construed as granting an entitlement to a higher rate of pay.
This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.
A Recruitment Incentive May Be Authorized for a newly selected employee when appointed to a permanent, temporary, or term position. A Federal employee who is transferring to the National Park Service from another component, bureau or Federal agency and who does not meet the conditions under 5 CFR 575.102 is not eligible for a recruitment incentive.
Non-Competitive Rehire Eligibility: Temporary seasonal employees can only maintain their non-competitive rehire eligibility if they work no more than a combined total of Temporary NTE less than 1040 hours anywhere in the National Park Service (NPS) within their established service year. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS).
If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility.
The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM.
Employment may be terminated at any time due to fluctuations in funding levels, project needs, employee performance, or other considerations.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
