Job Description
The Associate General Counsel will play a key role in supporting CleanChoice Energy's renewable energy projects, including solar energy and battery storage. The ideal candidate will have expertise in transactional law, with a focus on the development, acquisition, and financing of energy projects. This role will involve negotiating and structuring complex transactions, including tax equity, debt, and preferred equity financing, while advising senior management and cross-functional teams.
Responsibilities

  • Provide legal support on the development, acquisition, and financing of solar and battery storage projects in PJM, NY, and NE.
  • Draft, negotiate, and review a variety of agreements, including power purchase agreements (PPAs), interconnection agreements, land leases, EPC contracts, and financial documentation related to tax equity, debt, and preferred equity structures.
  • Advise on regulatory compliance and permitting issues related to solar and battery storage projects in relevant jurisdictions.
  • Manage external counsel and work closely with internal project development, finance, and operations teams.
  • Support corporate governance, risk management, and compliance activities.
  • Provide legal advice on construction and operational matters, including environmental, health, and safety regulations.
  • Assist with corporate transactions, including mergers and acquisitions and joint ventures.
  • Stay current on industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices in renewable energy law.

Qualifications

  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school and active bar membership.
  • 5-7+ years of experience as a transactional attorney, ideally with a focus on renewable energy or infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of tax equity, debt financing, and preferred equity structures in the energy sector.
  • Experience negotiating complex project finance documents, including PPAs, interconnection agreements, and EPC contracts.
  • Knowledge of regulatory frameworks in PJM, NY, and NE.
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to work collaboratively across departments.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • Prior experience working in-house or at a law firm focused on energy project development.
    • Familiarity with environmental law and permitting processes for renewable energy projects.
    • Experience with battery storage systems and related contractual arrangements.

Travel
CleanChoice Energy is a remote-first work environment with occasional Charlotte, NC or Washington DC office hours, and travel to team meetings and CleanChoice events.
