General Summary:

The role of AVP, Closed Block Financial Management plays a central role in the development and communication of financial analysis for Unum's Closed Block which is largely comprised of our long-term care and closed individual disability product lines.

It is a high visibility role, with significant opportunity to excel as a thought leader, communicator, and strategist. The role combines financial management and actuarial modeling: two functions that overlap in meaningful ways but also demand distinct focus.

On modeling, we aspire to enhance our industry leading long-term care financial modeling environment; and on financial management we will continue to build robust and insightful quality analytics related to the performance and near-term expectations surrounding the Closed Block.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Experienced finance and actuarial leader in the areas of modeling and financial management
  • Responsible for maintaining and refining the modeling function supporting Unum's long-term care product line. The functional leader will work closely with the Closed Block finance team and Unum's centralized modeling team to execute on modeling exercises which include but are not limited to: development / maintenance of projection models, application of model governance and industry standards, model risk management, and application of actuarial best practices to our modeling work.
  • Drive the development of monthly and quarterly reporting of financial results for the Closed Block in coordination with the rest of the Closed Block finance team. Demonstrate an expertise in the product line, the underlying economics, and the accounting regimes which we report under. Ensure complete and accurate reporting of financial results with an emphasis on applying quality analytics to provide robust insights with respect to the drivers. Communicate this analysis to broad audiences with success.
  • Drive the development of the financial plans for the Closed Block, ensuring high quality analysis and careful consideration of the drivers that will impact the near-term future financial performance of the Closed Block.
  • Maintain strong and effective partnerships with Finance leadership, peer Closed Block teams, Corporate Actuarial, and other Finance teams.

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher is required
  • Credentialed actuary - Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (or like designation from another actuarial association) preferred
  • 10 or more years relevant work experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge of finance and actuarial concepts, at practical and strategic levels, and the technical skills required to support it.
  • Proficient or better in technology necessary to carry out responsibilities (e.g. Prophet).
  • Strong communication skills, including the proven ability of relaying complex financial and technical concepts to stakeholders with diverse backgrounds and viewpoints.
  • Strong people leader and coach of talent. Applies situational leadership to guide to outcomes. Approach fosters inclusivity and sense of empowerment among team members. Is able to provide tactical and strategic direction as necessary.
  • Strong negotiation and partnership skills, across all levels of management, with ability to influence and challenge decisions and processes as appropriate. Attentive to stakeholder management.
  • Experience navigating change in a positive manner with both individuals and teams.
  • Proven conflict resolution and facilitation skills
  • Operates with strong conceptual thinking rather than strictly in a 'rules' framework

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

$133,500.00-$261,000.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
