This is a highly collaborative role where attention to detail, regulatory knowledge, and leadership skills are essential to success.

Accountabilities:

  • Lead, coach, and develop coding staff, including performance evaluations, scheduling, and disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Monitor coding productivity, quality, and workflow to ensure compliance with internal standards and external regulations.
  • Perform regular audits of coding and abstracting work to maintain accuracy and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Support achievement of Accounts Receivable and Discharged Not Billed targets through operational oversight.
  • Ensure adherence to federal, state, and payer-specific coding guidelines, including DRG and APR-DRG assignment.
  • Serve as a subject matter resource for coding questions, clinical documentation, and technical issues.
  • Assist in developing policies, procedures, and educational materials to improve coding practices.
  • Support staff training, education sessions, and ongoing professional development initiatives.
  • If needed, contribute directly to coding workload during peak periods to ensure operational continuity.
  • Requirements:

    • 3+ years of coding experience in inpatient, outpatient, emergency department, or professional fee environments.
    • Prior leadership or supervisory experience in a healthcare coding setting.
    • Strong knowledge of coding classification systems, including DRGs and APR-DRGs.
    • Familiarity with clinical documentation improvement (CDI) processes and medical record review.
    • Understanding of electronic medical records (EMRs) and healthcare data systems.
    • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
    • Ability to manage teams, prioritize workloads, and operate under tight deadlines.
    • Excellent attention to detail with the ability to maintain accuracy in high-volume environments.
    • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for training, coaching, and cross-functional collaboration.
    • Professional coding certification required or preferred (e.g., CPC, CCS, CIC, COC, CPMA, RHIA, RHIT).
    • Additional certification in healthcare revenue cycle (CRCR) required or obtained within 9 months.
    • Ability to work independently while maintaining strong team coordination and support.
    • Benefits:

      • Competitive salary aligned with experience and market standards
      • Performance-based incentive programs and recognition opportunities
      • Comprehensive healthcare coverage (medical, dental, and vision)
      • Paid time off and flexible work arrangements (remote position)
      • Tuition reimbursement and professional certification support
      • Career development opportunities in healthcare revenue cycle leadership
      • Structured training, mentorship, and continuous learning programs
      • Retirement and financial wellness benefits
      • Employee well-being and support programs
