Our Ways of Working

We’re a remote-first company with team members located across the United States spanning multiple time zones. This means we put in extra effort to make sure we connect and collaborate in ways that make sense for us. We know how valuable the flexibility of remote work is for our employees so people can get the work done in the way that works for them and their teams. After all, many parents call Babylist their professional home, and sometimes, life puts you in a position where you just have to jump off that Zoom meeting to clean up that banana that’s getting stomped on by your 2 year old.

We know that personal connection is the foundation for the great work we do together. In order to quickly build those relationships, we offer the opportunity to meet with coworkers in person two times a year at a full company offsite and a departmental offsite. These are great opportunities to meet the people you work with every day and to do some of the work that is much more difficult to do virtually. Most of our roles are fully remote, but these opportunities to meet in person will involve limited amounts of travel. For some leaders, there might be more opportunities to get together in person that would require about 10% travel to Oakland, CA or elsewhere.

What the Role Is

The Controller leads our accounting teams through hyper growth as we scale our three revenue streams including ecommerce, affiliates, and advertising. As a trusted senior leader on our Finance and Accounting team, they will be key in developing the foundation, team, systems, and processes to support growing complexity. They’ll set the roadmap and execute on improvements for public readiness, and know how to fiercely prioritize what matters most. As an important part of our leadership team, the controller will understand how to partner with senior leaders across the organization and effectively communicate technical accounting at the right level to help stakeholders understand why something is important. They will provide engaging and skillful coaching to a team of passionate, thoughtful individuals. The controller will create a team environment that promotes high- performance, collaboration, ownership, and individual development. Ultimately, they will set the vision and own how we evolve our accounting function to meet our ambitious business goals.

Who You Are

• Passionate accounting leader with 10+ years of progressive experience, a CPA, and preferably Big Four audit experience
• You have experience with both private and public company accounting requirements on compliance and reporting
• You roll-up your sleeves and work in a hands-on management capacity
• A supportive leader and coach who inspires teams to do big things and solve hard problems  
• Highly organized, energetic, and charismatic leader, with demonstrable experience leading, developing and mentoring finance professionals, growing future leaders and inspiring high performing teams
• Strong problem solving and creative skills with the ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analyses
• Effective and persuasive in leading change across multiple groups, driving alignment, applying business acumen, company values and emotional intelligence that inspires others
• High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and accountability for results-orientation

How You Will Make an Impact

1. Develop and own the strategic roadmap for accounting for the entire company
2. Design your organization and processes to support increasing revenue and complexity
3. Own the yearly audit and oversee all accounting activities, including: updating technical accounting memos (AS606, 842), general ledger, AP, AR, analytical review, inventory accounting, equity transactions, and payroll
4. Work cross functionally to align accounting processes with new strategic initiatives across the business with excellence in stakeholder communication and collaboration
5. Lead and coach a team of accounting professionals to thrive in a culture where they can do their best work
