The ERISA Legal Counsel role will join Human Interest’s growing Legal & Compliance team, reporting to our Senior Legal Counsel, Product & Compliance. We are seeking an ERISA attorney with at least six years of legal experience to join our existing team.Â
What you get to do every day
- Provide advice, explanation, and assessment of ERISA/retirement legal risk to senior legal, business management, risk, and compliance teams
- Advise internal teams on the design, implementation, and ongoing administration of 401(k) and 403(b) plans
- Develop and deliver regular training sessions on ERISA related topics, including prohibited transactions, fiduciary responsibilities, and regulatory compliance
- Educate internal teams on legislative and regulatory developments
- Provide legal support to the client relations teams and manage and resolve legal issues related to client engagements
- Analyze transactions for compliance with ERISA/other applicable fiduciary laws
- Negotiate and draft legal agreements and other legal documentation
- Assist with disputes, inquiries, and subpoenas
What you bring to the role
- JD from an accredited law school and state bar admission required
- Top-tier law firm or financial services firm experience, with a strong preference for prior in-house recordkeeping experience
- Experience with:
- Tax and ERISA requirements applicable to qualified retirement plans, specifically 401(k) and 403(b) plans
- Analyzing and communicating changes/developments in the laws applicable to retirement plans
- The legal compliance aspects of servicing clients and their retirement plans, especially from the recordkeeping point of view
- General knowledge of IRA custodial and administration requirements is also desirable
- A demonstrated track record of skillfully being able to manage a diverse set of issues in partnership with operations, sales, customer service, and product and engineering teams
- Demonstrable leadership skills and the ability to work with a diverse team of legal and other professionals
- The confidence and interpersonal and networking skills necessary for effective interaction with both internal stakeholders and external parties
- Strong analytical, organizational, communication and client service skills
- The ability to work autonomously, quickly adapt, a track record of providing sound and practical advice and solutions, and a mindset to work within a fast-growing startup environment

Compensation - The salary range target for the role seniority described in this job description is $185,000 - $215,000. Final offer amounts depend on multiple factors including candidate experience and expertise, geographic location, compensation/equity mix, and market data. This position may also be eligible for additional incentives such as equity awards, short-term incentives, or sales compensation.
