Role purpose

The DevOps Engineer is responsible for designing, building, testing, documenting and supporting software solutions. The role exists to turn requirements and solution designs into reliable, maintainable, secure and supportable software that delivers customer, business and technology outcomes.

The existing Software Engineer position description describes the role as using engineering experience to design, implement and maintain platform services, champion strong engineering principles and contribute to the best outcome for the team.

Role summary

The DevOps Engineer will work to understand requirements, contribute to solution design, validate assumptions, write code, test changes, participate in reviews, maintain documentation and support release and production activities.

This role requires strong engineering craft, systems thinking, collaboration and ownership. Engineers are expected to build for more than functional completion. They must consider maintainability, testability, operability, security, performance and supportability.

For Senior Software Engineers, the role also includes mentoring engineers, raising technical standards, supporting technical decisions, improving team practices and participating in hiring activities

Key responsibilities

Engineering delivery

  • Understand business, product, technical and operational requirements.

  • Participate in solution design and technical planning.

  • Work on assigned tickets through to completion.

  • Write clean, maintainable and secure code.

  • Write and maintain unit tests.

  • Support integration, regression and release testing.

  • Participate in pull requests and code reviews.

  • Respond to feedback and improve implementation quality.

  • Ensure work is aligned to agreed engineering patterns, standards and practices.

  • Contribute to incremental delivery and continuous improvement.

Solution design and technical input

  • Contribute to technical design discussions.

  • Identify design options, trade-offs and implementation risks.

  • Validate assumptions through spikes or proof of concepts.

  • Provide input into assumptions, risks, issues and dependencies.

  • Identify edge cases, failure modes and operational impacts.

  • Work with Tech Leads, Architects and other engineers to align on implementation approach.

  • Help ensure solutions are practical, scalable, secure, testable and supportable.

Quality and engineering standards

  • Champion good engineering practices.

  • Improve quality through peer review, test coverage, maintainability and documentation.

  • Identify and reduce technical debt where possible.

  • Ensure code is readable, maintainable and fit for long-term ownership.

  • Support engineering hygiene, including build health, test reliability and deployment readiness.

  • Avoid creating unnecessary complexity or isolated patterns that are hard to support.

  • The “Good to Great” principles call out raising the bar as leaving systems, teams and decisions better than we, found them, with signals including improved quality, documentation, operability, testability and team habits.

Documentation and knowledge transfer

  • Create and maintain design documentation.

  • Create and maintain project documentation.

  • Document technical decisions, assumptions and constraints.

  • Maintain runbooks, operational notes and support documentation where required.

  • Conduct knowledge transfer sessions with support teams.

  • Share implementation context with engineers, QEs, support teams and stakeholders.

  • Ensure documentation is useful, current and accessible.

Release and production support

  • Support release readiness activities.

  • Conduct post-release verification activities.

  • Participate in production incident response where required.

  • Participate in post-incident reviews.

  • Support root cause analysis and durable remediation.

  • Improve monitoring, alerting, logging or runbooks where gaps are identified.

  • Help ensure the solution can be operated and supported after release.

Collaboration

  • Work closely with Product, Technical Analysts, QEs, Tech Leads, Architects, Delivery Leads and support teams.

  • Communicate progress, risks and blockers early.

  • Support backlog refinement and estimation.

  • Help clarify requirements and technical questions.

  • Contribute constructively to squad ceremonies.

  • Work collaboratively with internal and external delivery partners.

Required experience

Software Engineer

The successful candidate will have experience in:

  • Professional software engineering in product or platform delivery teams.

  • Java, .NET, front-end, mobile, API, integration or cloud engineering, depending on squad need.

  • Working in complex system architectures and support structures.

  • Building, testing and maintaining software services.

  • Working with APIs, integrations, services or distributed systems.

  • Participating in code reviews and pull request processes.

  • Writing unit tests and supporting quality practices.

  • Working in agile delivery teams.

  • Collaborating with analysts, engineers, QEs, product owners and architects.

  • Supporting production or release activities.

The Java and .NET position descriptions both call for 2–3 years of professional engineering experience, experience with complex architectures and support structures, and an interest in APIs, infrastructure design and DevOps ways of working.

Senior Software Engineer

In addition to the above, Senior Software Engineers should have experience in:

  • Delivering complex engineering scope across multiple systems or teams.

  • Mentoring engineers.

  • Leading technical design discussions within a squad.

  • Improving engineering practices.

  • Supporting incident response and production readiness.

  • Making sound technical trade-offs.

  • Influencing without formal authority.

  • Participating in hiring or technical assessment.

  • Raising standards in code quality, testing, documentation and operability.

Required skills and capabilities

Core engineering skills

  • Strong software development capability in relevant technologies.

  • Ability to write clean, maintainable and secure code.

  • Strong unit testing and quality mindset.

  • Understanding of APIs, services, integrations and data flows.

  • Ability to participate in solution design.

  • Ability to read, understand and improve existing codebases.

  • Ability to troubleshoot issues across systems.

  • Understanding of CI/CD, release and deployment practices.

  • Awareness of security, performance, reliability and observability considerations.

  • Ability to document design and implementation decisions clearly.

Delivery skills

  • Ability to work through assigned tickets to completion.

  • Ability to estimate work and identify uncertainty.

  • Ability to identify risks, assumptions, issues and dependencies.

  • Ability to work in agile squads.

  • Ability to balance speed, quality and operational risk.

  • Ability to support test, release and post-release verification.

  • Ability to work with support teams and complete knowledge transfer.

Qualifications

  • Relevant post-secondary qualification in technology, software engineering, computer science, information systems or equivalent industry experience.

  • Cloud, DevOps, security, agile or platform certifications are desirable but not mandatory.

  • Practical engineering experience and demonstrated delivery impact are more important than certification alone
