Job Description

Team: Others

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Dir, Pacific Northwest Urban Forestry based in the United States.

This senior regional leadership role sits at the intersection of urban forestry, climate resilience, and equitable community development across the Pacific Northwest. The position is responsible for advancing “tree equity” initiatives that ensure all communities—especially historically under-resourced and environmentally burdened areas—have access to the benefits of urban forests. Acting as a field-facing expert, the role builds strong partnerships with cities, state agencies, and community organizations while delivering technical assistance and strategic guidance. It combines policy influence, coalition-building, and hands-on program implementation to drive measurable environmental and social impact. The Director plays a critical role in shaping regional strategies, securing funding, and translating national tools into local action. This is a highly collaborative, mission-driven role requiring both strategic leadership and deep regional expertise.

Accountabilities:

  • Lead and execute a regional urban forestry strategy across Washington, Oregon, and Idaho to advance tree equity goals and measurable impact outcomes.
  • Build and sustain partnerships with municipalities, state agencies, federal partners, NGOs, and community-based organizations to expand urban forestry initiatives.
  • Provide technical assistance to cities and coalitions, including support for tree planting programs, urban canopy planning, policy development, and workforce engagement.
  • Co-lead and support regional initiatives such as the Washington State Tree Equity Collaborative, including coalition coordination, meetings, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Identify and pursue funding opportunities from public and private sources to support urban forestry programs and regional initiatives.
  • Deliver outreach, training, and thought leadership through presentations, convenings, and engagement with municipal leaders and practitioners.
  • Serve as the regional subject matter expert on urban forestry, tree equity tools, and community-based environmental planning.
  • Support program administration, including budgeting, reporting, project tracking, and coordination across internal teams and external partners.
  • Collaborate with philanthropy, communications, and policy teams to support fundraising, storytelling, and strategic initiatives.
  • Represent the organization in regional and national forums, strengthening visibility and influence in the urban forestry field.
  • Requirements:

    • 5–7+ years of experience in urban forestry, urban planning, environmental science, or related fields, with strong experience in the Pacific Northwest region.
    • Established relationships with municipal governments, state agencies, urban forestry councils, federal partners (including USFS), and community organizations.
    • Strong understanding of urban forestry systems, canopy assessment, tree equity principles, and community-based environmental planning.
    • Experience managing complex, multi-stakeholder projects and delivering outcomes in a remote or distributed work environment.
    • Demonstrated ability to build partnerships, lead coalitions, and navigate municipal systems, policies, and funding structures.
    • Experience with budgeting, grant management, and revenue generation to support program expansion and sustainability.
    • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts for diverse audiences and stakeholders.
    • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across cross-functional teams and external partners.
    • ISA Certified Arborist and/or Certified Urban Forest Professional preferred, with a relevant degree in environmental science, planning, or related discipline.
    • Strong alignment with environmental justice, equity-focused work, and community-centered urban forestry practices.
    • Benefits:

      • Competitive annual salary ranging from $90,000 to $95,000
      • Comprehensive health coverage including medical, dental, and vision insurance
      • 401(k) retirement plan with 5% employer match
      • Paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, parental leave, and additional paid time off programs
      • Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and wellness support resources
      • Flexible spending accounts and disability, life, and AD&D insurance coverage
      • Remote-first work model with regional flexibility and field engagement opportunities
      • Technology stipend and additional employee perks (including pet benefits)
      • Professional development opportunities within a national conservation and climate-focused organization
