Engineering Manager (Remote)

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Slickdeals is looking for an Engineering Manager to guide teams and individuals to plan and execute the vision set by product leadership. The first team you’ll help will be the Core Deals team which works on, among many other things, our Frontpage and the ability to help our customers discover great deals. Teams are responsible for developing new features, maintaining those features, and driving innovation within our PHP/MySQL-based web platform.

As one of the leaders on the Core Deals team, you will be responsible for coaching on agile principles, teaching software design and providing expert perspective on the lifecycle of product development. We need attention on individuals and interactions and for you to respond to the changing needs of each individual. 

You’ll need to develop a senior level technical understanding of our major components, and be a leader that can be counted on to facilitate finding solutions and providing hands-on software development. Ultimately we need you in a position to become a multiplier for others, setting things up so they can learn and grow. You won't be overly focused on day to day tasks, allowing you to focus on performance and career growth for the team. There will be additional time available for you to prepare technical platform solutions alongside your team in order to support the evolving needs of the business.

This position will report to our Director of Engineering, Coupons and Rewards.

THE ROLE:

• Hire, coach, and mentor engineers.
• Be accountable to your team for ensuring training is thorough and adaptive, and making sure the new team members are given guidance on how to make an impact.
• Embrace the changing needs of multiple individuals who all are from different backgrounds and will face often intangible challenges depending on the team they join.
• Engage individuals with various roles and responsibilities to carefully help them through various transition periods within the organization and their careers.
• Ensure the growth and recognition of members of your team with the support of your senior engineers and leadership. 
• Own solutions and develop software in our code base alongside your team members at various levels of involvement; owning tasks, defining flow, training, creating scaffolding.
• Partner with the Director to define a technical roadmap for your group to continuously improve the stability of your systems and the teams that depend on them for delivering value.
• Collaborate with other engineering leaders in the organization to align our overall engineering vision.
• Participate in technical collaboration with business and product stakeholders to create implementation strategies and own execution to deliver on business objectives.

THE CANDIDATE:

• You have at least 2 years of experience in an engineering management role where you had direct reports and were responsible for hiring and performance management.
• You have demonstrable examples of your ability to engage others and help them grow.
• You are a software engineer with at least 5 years of experience working within scaled web applications and PHP / MySQL so that you can learn our systems, and then train and coach engineers on developing implementation plans and provide hands-on assistance as part of their training.
• You have helped a team internalize the vision for success as a product developer such that their ability to self-manage is consistently improving.
• You have experience facilitating conversations to synthesize information between non-engineers and managers and reach consensus about technical products and issues.
• You are a leader on teams that share responsibility for initiatives from start to finish including business outcomes.
• You are a champion of agile product (scrum, kanban, etc.) and engineering (CI/CD, vertical slicing) methodologies.
• You have experience measuring team performance in terms of company objectives, stability, and implementing engineering wide initiatives.
• You can balance conflicting impediments and quickly identify appropriate actions to take to resolve the impediments.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

• You are a long time Slickdeals user.
• You have an understanding of technical SEO concepts.
• You have shared responsibility for defining technical roadmaps.
• You have either engineering or management experience in migrating aspects of a monolithic architecture into a service-based or microservices architecture.
• You are comfortable guiding teams and technology in a PHP/MySQL-based web platform that combines both homegrown frameworks as well as open-source frameworks such as Vue and Symfony.
• You have experience writing Javascript and TypeScript.
