Job Description
JW Player is a technology platform that powers billions of video streams every week for a wide array of video publishers and broadcasters worldwide. Our massive scale as a video platform results in an equally massive scale for our data, with millions of events collected from our flagship video player every minute. The Data Engineering team at JW Player is responsible for ingesting and processing that incoming stream, and more broadly also empowering folks across the company to leverage data in building products or answering questions in accurate, reliable, scalable fashion.
As a Manager of Data Engineering at JW Player, you’ll work with cutting-edge big data tools and technology, partnering closely with data engineers and other software teams to solve critical challenges for one of the largest and fastest-growing video companies in the world.
As a Manager of Data Engineering, you will:
- Manage a team of data engineers, including planning and execution of technical projects
- Support the development and success of team members individually
- Contribute to development of distributed batch and real-time data infrastructure
- Work closely with product managers, analysts, and others to gather data needed to understand various products
- Partner with product teams to improve existing data products and develop new ones
- Develop goals for the team aligned with the priorities of the company
- Provide vision for the team’s technical and operational success
Requirements for the role:
- 5+ years of data engineering experience
- Experience leading software engineering teams
- Great organization skills, ability to lead multidisciplinary projects
- Experience and/or training with agile methodologies
- High proficiency in Python and SQL
- Humility, empathy, and a collaborative spirit
Bonus Points:
- Experience with data tools like Spark, Kafka, Flink
- Familiarity with AWS - in particular, EC2, S3, RDS, and EMR
- Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, Apache Airflow
- Proficiency in Java or Javascript
- Experience working on a platform team providing tools and services for other engineering teams
- Interest in or experience with building data products
Interview Process:
- Recruiter Screen
- 15-30 minute conversation with a Recruiter to learn more about your background and interests
- Team Round
- 60 minute live coding ability, in the programming language of your choice, with a Software Engineer
- 45 minute conversation where the Hiring Manager or someone from the team deep dives into your experiences
- Final Round
- Approx. 3.5 hour interview, broken up into segments that go over data architecture, conversation with a Senior Engineer, Q&A with the broader team, and a couple of role-playing exercises

According to New York City local Council laws, local New York City applicants residing in and performing this role in New York City will receive an annual salary dependent on experience between $175,000.00 - $195,000.00. In addition, applicants qualify for the benefits listed above.
The salary band is not applicable to applicants outside of New York City. Applicants located outside of the New York City area will have an adjusted rate equitable and competitive to their residing and surrounding area.
