Senior Corporate Counsel, Product and Marketing
Job Description
About the Job
PagerDuty is seeking an outstanding attorney and team player with a strong technology background to join our team as a Senior Product and Marketing Counsel to help anticipate the unexpected in an unpredictable world. This role will report to the Associate General Counsel of our Product and Engineering Legal team. You will be a generalist, serving as the primary touch point for our marketing team and parts of our product organization. You will collaborate with internal clients and legal specialists on a wide variety of considerations in the design, operation, and commercialization of innovative SaaS products. You will also act as the subject matter expert on various legal issues as driven by business need – both deploying pre-existing expertise and building new expertise as needed.Â
The ideal candidate has shown the ability to build deep expertise and to apply that to craft creative solutions. This person is also a highly motivated team player who loves to learn and is excited to make an immediate impact to the company’s values and growth.
What You’ll Do
- Provide legal guidance and support as you navigate our marketing, product, engineering, and other cross-functional teams through a wide variety of legal considerations to foster the development, operation, and commercialization of innovative technology products that customers love and trust.
- Review marketing programs, materials, and product features, providing counseling, responding to customer questions, and drafting a variety of internal and external documentation by anticipating, identifying, and assessing a myriad of legal and policy considerations that arise in cutting edge SaaS products in areas such as IP, advertising, contracts, privacy, data protection, litigation, export and trade compliance, and more.
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships with privacy and procurement specialists within the Product and Engineering Legal Team, and with others across our close-knit, in-house legal team. Partner with those subject matter experts, as well as with other in-house partners, internal clients across various levels of leadership, and outside counsel to develop solution-oriented guidance and practical risk mitigation strategies for a variety of interesting challenges.
- Serve as subject matter expert for various legal areas, as driven by business need in a dynamic and exciting environment. Build expertise as needed and keep current on relevant industry standards, laws, and regulations.Â
- Manage the day-to-day operations of protecting and advancing PagerDuty’s position in areas such as trademarks, patents, open source, or trade compliance, preferably including at least one area of our IP portfolio.
- Research legal issues and educate clients and stakeholders in a timely manner to set them up for success, understanding and proactively communicating the “why” behind advice or practices.
- Enable PagerDuty’s annual recurring revenue growth goals by supporting the development of world-class contract language, templates, external-facing materials, policies, playbooks, intake questionnaires, and legal processes and programs to minimize friction, mitigate meaningful risk, and centralize information.Â
Basic Qualifications
- Admitted into at least one US state bar in good standing, and either authorized to practice law in the state where you will be based or eligible to become authorized (e.g., eligible to register for an in-house counsel status in a state that offers such status).
- 7+ years of legal experience in a law firm, in-house, or government environment across at least two of the following areas, with expertise in at least one: IP, marketing/advertising, technology product counseling, commercial contracts, data security, privacy, artificial intelligence, technology litigation, security, privacy, M&A, regulatory compliance, and export controls and trade compliance.
Preferred Qualifications
- A combination of both in-house and law firm experience, including previous product counseling experience at a technology/SaSS company.
- A track record of successfully investigating, analyzing, and solving complex legal issues, including developing and proactively advising clients on practical risk mitigation in technology products or marketing in a fast-moving environment.
- A demonstrated ability to concisely, accurately, and clearly explain critical legal decisions with context to a wide range of audiences, both orally and in writing.
- A history of building strong relationships with cross-functional stakeholders, including translating between legal frameworks, technical details, and go-to-market activities, while developing solutions that take all of these into account.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize workflow, meet demanding deadlines, and lead complex projects that cut across organizational boundaries to successful completion, as well as to manage multiple projects at once, ensuring focus on the highest priority needs.
- Expertise or deep interest in at least one of the following areas: trademarks, patents, open source software, or copyrights.
- Demonstrated ability to act on the best information available and manage uncertainty, including in areas of newly emerging and evolving laws.
- A desire to learn, a strong work ethic, a high level of integrity, and dedication to providing top-notch legal counsel.
- A love of issues that lie at the intersection of technology and the law.
- A team player-mindset with a positive attitude, a love of solving problems, and a passion for delighting customers and earning their trust.
