Job description

Team: Legal

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Senior Legal Counsel – Energy in Canada.

This is a senior, business-facing legal role at the heart of energy transition and environmental commodity markets. You will support complex, high-value commercial transactions across renewable fuels, environmental credits, and energy trading activities, working directly with traders, commercial leaders, finance, risk, and operations teams. The role combines hands-on drafting and negotiation with strategic legal guidance in fast-moving and evolving markets. You will play a key part in structuring scalable contractual frameworks for emerging products and regulatory regimes. In addition, you will lead and mentor a small legal team while remaining deeply involved in day-to-day deal execution. This is an opportunity to shape legal foundations for innovative, cross-border energy markets within a highly commercial environment.

Accountabilities

You will be responsible for leading the drafting, negotiation, and execution of complex commercial agreements while supporting business growth across energy transition and environmental markets.

  • Draft, review, and negotiate high-value commercial agreements across renewable natural gas, biofuels, feedstocks, and environmental credits
  • Lead structuring and negotiation of commodity trading, supply, offtake, and structured transactions
  • Advise business teams on contractual risk allocation, delivery terms, pricing, performance obligations, and dispute resolution mechanisms
  • Support emerging and first-of-kind transactions requiring adaptable legal and commercial frameworks
  • Develop scalable contract templates, playbooks, clause libraries, and negotiation standards
  • Translate evolving regulatory requirements into practical contractual and business guidance
  • Support compliance with sanctions, trade regulations, and internal governance policies
  • Oversee legal entity management, corporate governance, and outside counsel engagement as needed
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and guidance to a small in-house legal team
  • Requirements

The ideal candidate is a seasoned commercial lawyer with strong experience in energy, commodities, or regulated markets, combining deep legal expertise with strong business acumen and leadership capability.

    • Law degree and membership in good standing with a Canadian provincial or territorial law society
    • 10+ years of legal experience with significant commercial drafting and negotiation responsibility
    • Strong background in energy, commodities, renewable fuels, environmental credits, or related regulated sectors
    • Proven ability to independently structure and negotiate complex commercial agreements
    • Strong understanding of commodity trading structures, risk allocation, and contractual frameworks
    • Experience working closely with commercial, trading, finance, risk, and operations teams
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; French is an asset
    • Leadership experience, including mentoring lawyers or managing small legal teams
    • Practical, business-oriented mindset with ability to operate in fast-paced environments
    • Benefits

      • Competitive compensation aligned with senior-level legal expertise
      • Comprehensive medical and dental insurance
      • Retirement savings plan with employer contributions
      • Fitness and wellness reimbursement program
      • Access to virtual healthcare and consulting services
      • Hybrid/remote work flexibility with semi-regular travel to Montreal
      • Modern office environment with on-site gym, wellness facilities, and amenities (for in-office visits)
      • Subsidized meals and employee perks at headquarters
      • Inclusive and diverse work culture focused on belonging and collaboration
