The Marketing Insights team at Upwork exists to uncover and amplify the needs of customers - clients and talent, both in the market at large and among those using Upwork. This team is responsible for designing, executing, and sharing quantitative and qualitative research that drives customer-first decisions and strategies across Upwork, building a deep understanding for customers' needs.
We are looking for a Senior Manager to join the team. You'll bring innate curiosity and a customer-obsessed mentality to uncover insights about our customers, brand, and industry, and influence our brand, product marketing and creative output. You will work collaboratively and partner with stakeholders across the organization. This position reports to the Director, Marketing Insights.

For all remote roles and roles based in California/Washington: The annual base salary for this position ranges from $124,000 - $168,000. Additionally, this position is eligible for the annual bonus plan or sales incentive plan and eligibility to participate in our long term equity incentive program.

Your Responsibilities:
- Define short and long term research priorities by identifying and elevating learning gaps from stakeholder interactions and business knowledge. Contribute to identifying and prioritizing research needs on a quarterly basis.
- Serve as a leader on the Marketing Insights team, working with vendors and junior researchers to provide feedback on methodologies, research materials, and reports.
- Independently plan, design, and execute multiple high impact research projects at one time to meet business needs and appropriately balance speed and rigor in tackling complex problems, delivering high quality work .
- Synthesize data from multiple sources to create a comprehensive and compelling story around complex business issues.
- Employ innovative research practices that are appropriate for our two-sided marketplace and meet the needs of a fast-paced environment.
- Distill research findings into actionable insights, delivering clear and concise reports with recommendations that enable the brand team to make better decisions.
- Manage research vendors and all aspects of projects, including scoping & budgeting, defining research objectives, selecting research methodologies and vendors, reviewing and refining research instruments, managing or executing analysis , and delivering reports with appropriate interpretation and takeaways.
- Provide expertise on research and advocate for our customers' needs.
What it Takes to Catch our Eye:
- Proven experience in market research (Insights Senior Manager, Senior Strategist, Lead Researcher or similar role). Experience in Tech, CPG, Staffing or a 2 sided marketplace preferred.
- Strong background in qualitative and quantitative methods; excellent data and analytical skills.
- Current on traditional and non-traditional/innovative research methods.
- Ability to work in a multifaceted, fast-paced environment and prioritize multiple projects at once while paying close attention to timelines, details, and budget. Ability to own senior-level stakeholder relationships.
- Expertise applying research to drive marketing, product, and sales strategies; demonstrated impact on business results from research findings.
- Experience successfully working with diverse cross-functional teams; able to collaborate with partners and stakeholders, influence leaders, and become a valued business partner.
- Excellent project management, including vendor and agency management.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; storyteller who is able to use insights to drive customer understanding and empathy across all levels of an organization.
- Strong critical thinking and high attention to detail.
- Work with a high degree of autonomy.
- Mentor and coach others.
