Senior Project Engineer

Nexom is presently seeking a Senior Project Engineer who will support the Engineering Department in carrying out its responsibilities. The candidate will be an integral team member of a growing and dynamic engineering team and will thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment using the latest technology. The Sr. Project Engineer is expected to apply their engineering judgment, operate with minimal direction, and contribute technically during early design and bid phases of a project.

They will work with other team members in the delivery of work related to mechanical/civil wastewater engineering design. Responsible for working on, and completing detailed engineering design, as well as providing design and technical support to applications engineers, sales team and the bid team. Demonstrate leadership within project teams by promoting best practices and mentoring less-experienced engineers when appropriate. This role involves a high level of multitasking for a wide variety of projects focused during the pre-construction and tender phase. This role will report to the Senior Director of Project Engineering & Service.

  • Anticipating risks and proactively addressing issues before they impact bids or designs.
  • Acting as a trusted technical partner to Applications Engineering, Sales, and Project Engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transform preliminary concepts and sketches into engineering designs and project informational requirements
  • Preparation of preliminary drawings for process piping and mechanical designs including P&IDs, PFDs, and process mechanical layouts (coordinating with drafting personnel as appropriate)
  • Preparation of standard details, drawings, and specifications for design components
  • Perform design calculations for mechanical and hydraulic elements, assist with preparation of technical documents required for preliminary designs, RFPs, and bids, including project specific specifications, drawings, and equipment details.
  • Assist applications engineering in determining budgeting, general conditions and strategic position for project opportunities being considered
  • Communicate with and provide technical support to application engineering, sales, and bid team during the pre-design, bid, and design phases as well as during construction if technical discussions are required
  • Review project plans and specifications and comment on the design, scheduling, potential cost saving measures in addition to construction challenges and risks
  • Read, interpret and understand bid packages, contract drawings and technical specifications with a solid understanding of trade specific scopes of work
  • Assist with preparation of detailed and accurate project scopes of work
  • Specify, issue requests, and receive quotations for specialty items required for projects.
  • Prepare and/or review technical writing as required, such as Installation instructions, work instructions, Operation & Maintenance manuals, documents required for approvals, etc.
  • Work as part of a team in the timely production of engineering and construction designs, drawings, and plans, that meet established requirements and standards and internal quality measures
  • Other related duties as reasonably assigned.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Mechanical / Civil / Chemical Engineering
  • P.Eng. or eligible for P.Eng. within no more than 6 months
  • Minimum 5 years of process/mechanical/civil design in water/wastewater
  • Work experience in the construction/commissioning of water/wastewater equipment considered an asset
  • Work experience in a general contracting or construction environment considered an asset

Required Skills

  • Demonstrate a good understanding of process/civil/mechanical engineering fundamentals, design practices, and civil/mechanical drawing conventions; an above average mechanical aptitude is important
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to interact effectively and build long-term relationships with colleagues, engineering consultants, general contractors, sub-trades and suppliers required.
  • Desire to continually develop professional skills
  • High degree of technical competence
  • Self-starter with a strong ability to work independently while functioning as part of an effective team
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and meet competing deadlines
  • Capable of working in a fast-paced environment on projects ranging from preliminary studies to detailed design
  • Proficiency in Excel and MS Word, and knowledge of AutoCAD required.
  • Experience in the preparation of drawings, including 3D; usage and experience with AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, Vault, SolidWorks, Inventor, or Revit is an asset
  • Infrequent travel to customer sites in Canada and the US may be required
  • Valid Driver’s license
