Job Description Summary:

The Consumer Engineering Team is a cross-functional team of people dedicated to enabling world-class, cross-product experiences through frontend libraries. We are working on creating a platform that can be used across PayPal and helps achieve the following business goals:

1) Scalable & more reusable frameworks for experience development across the company
2) Faster Time to market with minimal possible investment to allow experimenting on new use cases/product lines
3) Reduce duplication of efforts & have framework(s) to build for all clients build experiences with a unified central approach to a great extent

The Consumer Engineering Team is looking for a person with strong Java skills and solid real-world experience. The candidate will work with peers in development and product management to solve complex software engineering problems and proactively propose solutions to address technical challenges and business requirements. The candidate will be expected to quickly become an effective member and eventually a leader within their individual scrum team after a reasonable amount of ramp-up time.

The candidate should have great communication skills and ideally experience working with a distributed team. Experience managing or contributing to open-source projects would come in handy, so would any kind of high-profile work with many contributors & customers.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement highly available and scalable backend software components in Java in the PayPal compliance domain.
  • Conduct design and code reviews, fix bugs, and resolve production issues
  • Partner closely with the engineering manager, design, and product stakeholders
  • Work with tooling and platform teams to provide innovation and solutions for analytics, experimentation, and quality
  • Deliver code in an Agile team environment
  • Follow and be a strong advocate for clean code principles
  • Drive innovation through rapid prototyping and iterative development
  • Experience with tracking and analytics a plus
  • Maintain and enhance the existing architectural documentation and create a new one as needed

Required Technical Skills:

  • 6+ years of experience with customer-facing applications
  • Expert in back-end development using Java EE technologies (e.g. Java language, application servers, servlet containers, JMS, JPA, Spring MVC, Hibernate).
  • Strong OOP skills, with the ability to analyze requirements and transform them into scalable software designs.
  • Experience with HTTP, REST API's and competent designing and building web services/microservices in a commercial setting.
  • Cognizant of SQL and other/NoSQL/modern database and storage technologies. Desired understanding of Oracle, JDBC, and ORM frameworks (e.g. Hibernate).
  • Experience with Design Patterns, MVC, and frameworks (e.g. Spring).
  • Competent in design/implementation for reliability, availability, scalability, and performance.
  • Competent in software engineering tools (e.g. Java build tools) and best practices (e.g. unit testing, test automation, continuous integration, etc.).
  • Should be a strong advocate of code craftsmanship, good coding standards, and use of tools that will improve the quality of the delivered code
  • Demonstrate a high level of curiosity, passion for technology, pride of ownership, and strive for excellence
  • Experience with client-side JavaScript frameworks such as React, Angular is a plus
