Job Description:
This position is responsible for supervising the Tax Research Group with day-to-day activities in efforts to maintain and develop tax products, including up-to-date, consistent, and accurate interpretations of tax statutes, regulations, and other compliance policies.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide guidance to those they lead on the creation and execution of their work assignments.
- Communicate status of team activities to project team and research management.
- Assist in setting deadlines, scope of projects, and assist in the review of work completed by the team.
- Identify, document, and implement new content standards and procedures.
- Ensure consistency of standards and procedures across product lines.
- Structure complex tax content within Vertex products in a logical manner that is consistent with system architecture and platforms.
- Understand and resolve complex customer issues and systems architecture to develop solutions.
- Monitor requirements and product changes and update processes accordingly.
- Represent Tax Research as a stakeholder in segment level product requirements and project planning activities.
- Ensure testing is performed to SSAE-16 and internal audit standards at all times.
- Lead by example; set and communicate high expectations, motivate self and others to achieve them.
- Own attainment of high employee satisfaction and retention; lead development of programs and initiatives within group to attain high employee satisfaction.
- Promote common goals and shared purpose among team members.
- Look for opportunities to improve work processes and activities by using business technology and other resources.
- Raise leadership awareness regarding appropriate resourcing of staff to achieve goals and objectives.
- Lead or participate in other operational, strategic, and complex projects or duties as assigned.
- Represent Vertex as a subject matter expert at product demonstrations, presentations, seminars, panels and webcasts if needed.
- Occasional travel required.
- Participate in other projects or duties.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Determine appropriate resourcing of staff in order to achieve goals and objectives.
- Coach employees on performance gaps, career development opportunities, and strategies.
- Mentor and coach employees on all human resource related processes including onboarding, performance management, employee relations, compensation and rewards.
- Recognize others’ contributions and share credit for success.
- Own attainment of high employee satisfaction and retention; lead development of program and initiatives within group to attain high employee satisfaction.
- Prepare and manage budget as assigned; analyzes variances and initiates corrective actions to maximize operational performance.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Proficiency in all aspects of tax compliance appropriate for the position.
- Strong quality assurance background.
- Strong leadership skills.
- Process oriented.
- Knowledge and understanding of content development and testing processes.
- Excellent presentation and facilitation skills.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or similar degree
- Five (5) plus years of experience in corporate indirect tax;
- With up to two years (2) plus years of leadership experience
- Experience with tax software is highly desirable.
- Experience with software testing processes and tools.
- Or equivalent combination of education and/or experience
