This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Technical Designer (3-month contract) based in Canada.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute directly to the development of a new cooperative horror exploration game within a highly creative and collaborative game studio environment. You will work at the intersection of design, engineering, and content creation, helping shape gameplay systems, interactive experiences, and narrative-driven moments. The position involves prototyping and implementing features that define player interaction, immersion, and moment-to-moment gameplay. You will collaborate closely with designers, artists, engineers, and production teams to bring ambitious ideas into functional in-game systems. The environment is fast-paced, iterative, and highly technical, with a strong emphasis on creative problem-solving and gameplay quality. This is a hands-on role ideal for a designer who enjoys building, scripting, and refining interactive experiences from concept to implementation.
Accountabilities:
You will be responsible for designing, prototyping, and implementing gameplay features and systems that enhance player experience, ensuring smooth integration between design intent, technical constraints, and production goals.
- Prototype, implement, and iterate on gameplay systems including player abilities, interactable objects, game flow, and scripted sequences
- Develop event hooks for narrative and audio systems, as well as tutorial and onboarding experiences
- Collaborate with artists and designers to improve content implementation and maximize use of existing tools and technology
- Work closely with engineers to translate design intentions into functional systems while respecting performance constraints
- Identify and resolve gameplay bugs and support continuous iteration of features
- Provide effort estimates and progress updates in collaboration with producers and leadership teams
- Support the development of engaging cooperative gameplay experiences in a horror exploration setting
- Minimum 5 years of experience in game development, including at least 2 years in a technical design role
- Experience shipping at least one game title, ideally in exploration or horror genres
- Strong familiarity with modern text-based scripting languages
- Proven ability to work independently in fast-paced, highly technical environments
- Excellent collaboration skills with strong verbal and written communication abilities
- Ability to work effectively across design, engineering, art, and production teams
- Strong problem-solving skills and adaptability in iterative development cycles
- Passion for building interactive gameplay systems and polished player experiences
- Experience or interest in cooperative gameplay systems is an asset
- Enthusiasm for innovation and creative experimentation in game design
- Interest in broader entertainment media such as games, films, comics, or novels is a plus
