Position Description
The VP, Controller is a key member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), reporting to the Chief Financial Officer and will be responsible for the global billing and accounting operations, including corporate/GL accounting, financial reporting, statutory accounting/reporting, technical accounting, accounts payable, cash applications, and fixed assets accounting, with a focus on continuous process improvement.
The VP, Controller provides leadership in maintaining effective internal controls and financial reporting. The role oversees and ensures the timely and accurate delivery of financial reporting requirements including monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements. The VP, Controller sets the vision and direction of the future state of financial system and business processes and makes key decisions related to such processes. As a member of the Finance leadership team, the VP, Controller interacts regularly with our Executive Leadership Team, private equity investors, audit committee, external audit firm and other third party advisors.

Responsibilities
Accounting & Controls:
- Leadership of the global billing and accounting operations, including corporate/GL accounting, financial reporting, technical accounting, accounts payable, cash applications, fixed assets, and statutory accounting/reporting which is composed of a team of 170 team members
- Leadership of the Company's financial close process, including preparation of monthly financial statements and quarterly SEC-like financial statements for lenders and bondholders
- Serve as a key leader and decision maker on the financial systems transformation project liaising with external third party advisory firm.
- Continually evaluate opportunities to drive greater efficiencies and effectiveness in transactional accounting as well as the monthly, quarterly and annual accounting close.
- Monitor performance of operational accounting teams ensuring targets for key performance indicators are being met and escalations are resolved timely.
- Accountable for the accurate and timely interpretation of GAAP accounting standards and the accurate incorporation of such interpretations into the company's financial statements.
- Ensure compliance with all GAAP, FASB rules and regulations in addition to state, local and corporate policies, regulations and laws.
- Provide required support and leadership as required with respect to transactions including financings, M&A due diligence (as required) and integration of accounting operations integration.
- Ensures accounting and billing internal controls are designed and operating effectively.
- Serve as a key confidante to the CFO on all accounting and control matters.
- Oversight for timely planning and execution of the annual audit in conjunction with external public accounting firm ensuring deadlines and budgets are met and management of the relationship of the public accounting firm.
- Participate in cross-functional teams driving corporate initiatives and a variety of business automation and transformation processes.
- Liaise with other departments on pertinent matters including, but not limited to, Treasury, IR, Corporate Finance, Operational Finance, Internal Audit, Tax and Legal.
- Partner with Zayo's People & Culture team to develop and maintain comprehensive talent management strategies and programs to attract, onboard, develop, assess and retain a high performing team.
Qualifications:
- Deep subject matter expertise in accounting.
- Experience having led the functions for an organization of comparable size, growth profile and complexity.
- Track record of building, leading, and inspiring high-performing teams of 100+ team members.
- Strong collaborator and partner with demonstrated ability to drive cross-functional collaboration across business and finance teams at all levels.
- Independent, self-motivated individual with a positive, service-focused attitude. Excellent judgment with a strong work ethic.
- Analytical thinker with honed problem solving and decision-making skills, including the ability to streamline and simplify complexity.
- Excellent communicator, both written and verbal.
- Highly responsible, with the ability to prioritize and multitask.
- Capable of successfully managing C-level, audit committee and investor relationships and effectively partnering on strategy development, financial planning and execution.
- Demonstrates the highest level of integrity.
- Executive-level communication and presentation skills in both formal and informal settings.
- Possess a strong executive presence to effectively communicate/educate important accounting issues.
- Ability to adapt well to change, adjust to shifting priorities and thrive in a fast paced environment.
- Depending on the candidate's location, must have flexibility to travel, as needed.
Education & Experience:
- A minimum of twenty (20) years of progressive accounting experience
- Recent experience as a Corporate Controller or VP of Accounting in a complex (ideally public) company setting
- Undergraduate degree in accounting
- CPA, required
- A minimum of five (5) years' of experience in a Big Four public accounting firm, preferred
- Graduate degree, highly preferred
Base Pay Range: $200,000 - $250,000 (commensurate with experience).
