Summary This vacancy is for Cartographic Technician position in the National Processing Center located at the U.S. Census Bureau National Processing Center in Jeffersonville, IN. This Job Opportunity Announcement may be used to fill other Cartographic Technician, 1371-5, FPL None positions within the Census Bureau in the same geographical location with the same qualifications and specialized experience. Learn more about this agency Duties The individual selected for this position will: Perform a variety of fundamental coding tasks in support of branch operations such as geocoding, editing, matching, transcribing, verifying, reviewing, etc. Provide verification and correction of geocoding work by applying rules specific to Census geography to determine the accuracy of coding work and the usage of the appropriate software application. Perform various functions, primarily as a verifier, such as geographical coding, Arc Viewing (GIS), research using geographic reference materials, including paper and digital maps, atlases, zip code directories, automated files, etc., for use in problem solving, geographic allocation, determination of population and housing data, statistical processing, etc. Review various maps and/or automated files for geographic coverage, geographic code, clerical areas and locating, recording and correcting errors on automated data files, zero tiger lines and employer update files. Perform statistical and/or geographic coding tasks of considerable difficulty. Specialized Experience: You qualify at the GS-05 level if you possess one year of specialized experience that equips you with the skills needed to perform the job duties. This specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the grade 04 level to meet the qualification requirements in the Federal Service. Specialized experience is defined as experience assisting with research, evaluation, and ordering of geographic reference materials; using a computer workstation to allocate map spots and feature/address information to specified geographic tabulation areas. OR Education: For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 18 semester hours in courses such as those shown above for GS-3. Examples of acceptable courses include cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, remote sensing, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. Not more than 9 of the 18 semester hours should have been in mathematics or statistics. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Additional information Tour of Duty: Hours will be 7:00 a.m.to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Alternate Work Schedule is available. Alternate Work Schedule is an 80-hour biweekly basic work requirement that is scheduled in less than 10 days, i.e., eight 9-hour days/nights, one 8-hour day/night, and one day off. Positions may include shift work, evening or weekend work, hours will vary. This position may include full time and/or part time work and may require a mixed tour agreement.
