Summary This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates. Learn more about this agency Duties The Research Data and Computing (RDCO) office at NIST manages a variety of resources and activities to advance the NIST mission through strategic data assets and computational excellence. RDCO leads NIST data strategy and governance in alignment with Department of Commerce and works in cooperation with other organizations to enhance digitalization capabilities for metrology. The office facilitates laboratory science through leadership in adoption of data-driven methodologies which accelerate research productivity and AI readiness. Digital standards and best practice are leveraged to foster metrology including development of new datasets and modeling benchmarks harnessing scientific AI. Through both scientific and technical collaborations with laboratory organizational units, RDCO promotes innovation and stakeholder utilization of novel metrology through use of data, software, and AI. Duties include: Collaborating with NIST Laboratory scientific and technical staff to implement research data science solutions that harness AI and machine learning in alignment with laboratory information management goals Developing scientific data readiness for AI through computational materials science Establishing AI metrology data benchmarks for machine learning decision-making Participating in professional partnerships to facilitate the advancement and exchange of NIST AI metrology data capabilities while conducting outreach to the external NIST research community. Basic Requirements: Degree: Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position. or Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown in paragraph A above, plus additional education or appropriate experience. In addition to the above basic requirement, this position requires one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least at the GS-9 (ZP-II at NIST) level. Specialized experience is defined as: This position will require experience in the development and application of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Modeling with a disciplinary specialization in computational materials science OR 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree OR Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
