Summary About the Position: This is a full-time civilian faculty position at the U.S. Army War College (USAWC) Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) as provided under Title 10 USC. Initial appointment may be up to three years, the first of which may be a trial period. The appointment may be renewed in one- to five-year increments. Academic rank and salary will be based on the selectee's academic credentials, experience, and professional accomplishments. This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Top-Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter. This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time. Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens This is a term appointment in the excepted service starting on or before 1 June 2025 and no to exceed 3 years. Qualification Requirements: Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position; or Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field; or Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. In addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements above, applicants will be rated on the following: SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): 1. A Ph.D., or equivalent evidence of scholarly experience, in international relations, regional or comparative studies, history, or related field, with an emphasis on Russia and/or Eurasia is strongly preferred. 2. Demonstrated knowledge of Russian national security issues and/or the Russian military. 3. Record of scholarly and/or applied research and publication in national security, regional defense, or military policy and strategy, history, transregional studies (Eurasia), or related areas. Working with interdisciplinary teams to examine strategic issues and conduct rigorous analytical research is desired. 4. Ability to serve as a project team lead and/or a team member of collaborative research projects. 5. Ability to teach and develop curriculum at the undergraduate, graduate, ad/or senior service college level is preferred. 6. Regional language proficiency in Russian and/or another Balto-Slavic language is preferred. 7. A record of successful government service involving defense policy and strategy formulation at the regional/strategic level or non-governmental work of a similar nature and scope, such as with a think tank, media organization, or international organization is desired, but not required.
