Director of Data Engineering

The Director of Data Engineering will help define and lead data engineering, architecture, data quality and data governance at Reformation. You will be designing solutions, writing code, defining standards, and establishing best practices across the company. This hands-on role will work with department leads, external vendors, and engineering to define and realize the data strategy.  You will also mentor and direct a team of data engineers establishing best practices, development process and ensuring quality standards.


What You’ll Do:

  • Manage a team of data engineers within Reformation’s technology team
  • Apply hands-on subject matter expertise and administer our modern data stack (Fivetran->BigQuery->dbt->Looker).
  • Define data modeling standards and foundational best practices in our transformation layer (dbt).
  • Ensure data standardization, quality, governance, and provide a single source-of-truth for the various data domains.
  • Work with application engineers to understand product changes and proactivity update existing pipelines/ data models. 
  • Collaborate with data engineers and application engineers to understand new data sources (when applicable) and integrate necessary pipelines into the current eco system. 
  • Create and maintain a robust data dictionary/ catalog that will help guide business analysts and provide visibility into data definitions. 
  • Establish data governance processes, policies, and guidelines to maintain the integrity and security of data.
  • Create and maintain critical data standards and metadata that allows data to be understood and leveraged as a shared asset.
  • Work with data security to ensure access controls are established.

What You’ll Need:

  • Minimum of 10 years of data experience working in engineerings capacity
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in managing cloud platforms and applications.
  • Demonstrated experience in data modeling, information architecture, analytics, schema evolution, data organization layouts.
  • Experience in a retail/ ecommerce business is a plus. 
  • Experience working with transactional, temporal, time series, structured and unstructured data.
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, storage optimization and query optimization.
  • Experience with designing ETL/ELT systems including both relational and document data sources.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to champion ideas.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize workload
