About the Role:

Motive is looking for an experienced, self-motivated, and forward-thinking Employment Counsel to join its growing in-house legal team and support the company’s global workforce.  This role works closely with Motive’s business and operations units, in particular its Human Resources team, to deliver the highest quality legal advice and strategic business guidance on a broad range of labor and employment matters. The ideal candidate will be a natural communicator and team player with extraordinary business judgment, unquestioned personal integrity, and the ability to lead as well as collaborate.  

What You'll Do:
  • Providing advice to the People and Places team on how to comply with employment laws worldwide. Topics include contracts (offer letters, release agreements), job classifications (exempt/non-exempt, employee/consultant), wages (commissions), pay equity, benefits and leaves of absence, employee mobility, immigration, performance management, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, disability, reasonable accommodations, safety (pandemics), whistleblowing and ethics
  • Communicating empathetically and making sure employees feel heard, valued and recognized for their contributions especially during difficult conversations 
  • Assessing risks under pressure and being able to give clear and decisive advice to managers across all business units
  • Providing direction and oversight for workplace investigations
  • Collaborating with HR Operations to develop processes and procedures appropriate to the company’s risk profile
  • Delivering employee trainings on ethics and integrity, and anti-harassment and non-discrimination laws, among other topics
What We're Looking For:
  • J.D. and admitted to practice law in the United States
  • 6+ years of relevant labor and employment law experience, both law firm and in-house 
  • Persuasive at a senior level with business management teams
  • Solutions-oriented, biased towards action and impact, see problems as opportunities
  • Growth mindset, curiosity, and willingness to learn from mistakes made along the way 
  • Passionate about work, no task too big or too small, sweat the details without losing sight of the big picture
  • Enjoy a fast-paced working environment
  • Humble with low-ego and a deep commitment to your teammates
