This role offers a unique opportunity to lead the development of advanced data systems that drive complex scientific exploration programs. You will manage a team of high-performing software engineers, collaborating closely with data scientists and geologists to design, build, and maintain robust cloud-based platforms that transform raw exploration data into actionable insights. As a hands-on leader, you will influence both the technical direction and team culture while tackling high-impact projects that support the discovery of critical energy transition metals. This position combines technical innovation, cross-functional collaboration, and strategic leadership in a dynamic, remote-friendly environment, enabling measurable contributions to scientific breakthroughs and sustainable resource development.

Accountabilities:

The Engineering Manager, Data Systems is responsible for driving technical leadership and team performance across data engineering initiatives:

  • Build, mentor, and lead a diverse team of software engineers, fostering a high-performing and collaborative culture.
  • Partner with data scientists, geoscientists, and other engineers to plan, prioritize, and deliver high-impact projects that accelerate exploration objectives.
  • Contribute hands-on to projects as an individual contributor for roughly one-third of the time.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary leadership to align engineering efforts with broader organizational strategy and technical vision.
  • Develop and maintain robust, distributed cloud-based data systems, ensuring performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Support cross-functional collaboration, coaching your team to communicate effectively with domain experts and translate technical solutions into actionable insights.
  • Identify technical risks, drive solutions, and continuously improve engineering processes to maximize project impact.

  • Requirements:

The ideal candidate will have a combination of engineering leadership experience, technical expertise, and domain curiosity:

    • 8+ years of experience building production software systems.
    • 3+ years in an engineering leadership role with direct reports.
    • Experience designing and managing robust distributed cloud data systems, ideally with large geospatial or scientific datasets.
    • Strong understanding of multiple database and data storage technologies.
    • Proven track record of delivering impactful projects from problem definition to implementation.
    • Comfortable navigating ambiguity and prioritizing effectively across multiple inputs.
    • Formal education or professional experience in natural sciences is a plus.
    • Intellectual curiosity and eagerness to learn about mineral exploration and geoscience.
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills for working with non-software domain experts.
    • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, early-stage, and dynamic environment, balancing technical, strategic, and operational responsibilities.

    • Benefits:

      • Competitive base salary range: $200,000 – $240,000 USD.
      • Remote work flexibility within the United States.
      • Opportunity to lead high-impact technical projects in scientific discovery.
      • Collaboration with interdisciplinary teams of engineers, data scientists, and domain experts.
      • Career growth and mentorship opportunities within a fast-growing, technology-driven organization.
      • Comprehensive benefits package, including health coverage, retirement plans, and professional development opportunities.
