By tackling inefficiencies in the food system, we’ve created a new supply chain that brings value to farmers and food makers, fights food waste, and saves our customers an average of $23.04 per order. Since 2018, our passionate and motivated team of problem solvers has built a full online grocery marketplace and rescued tens of millions pounds of food that might otherwise have gone to waste  .  Fixing a broken food system isn’t easy peasy lemon squeezy, but we’re doing it everyday!

The Misfits Market Sustainability Team is expanding to hire our first Sustainability Coordinator, reporting to the Head of Sustainability. The Sustainability Team sits within Operations and partners closely with all Misfits departments. Through this position, the Sustainability Coordinator will gain experience working in Sustainability for a mission-driven e-commerce grocer. The Sustainability Coordinator will:

  • Grow and foster sustainability and impact capacity at Misfits. Help us to embed and grow sustainability focus in our company culture and structure, through collateral building, process development and improvement, internal and external partnerships, reporting and certification.
  • Save food from waste, and send all materials to their highest and best outcome. Support our work to meet or exceed our annual food saving goal, and certify two Fulfillment Centers as TRUE Zero Waste.

Focus areas and deliverables for the Sustainability Coordinator include:

  • TRUE Zero Waste certification. Misfits Market has made a commitment to achieve TRUE Zero Waste certification across its Fulfillment Centers (FCs). The Sustainability Coordinator will support this commitment by:
  • Track and report all waste across Misfits facilities, in coordination with an AI-powered third party (providing utility bill smart scanning services)
  • Develop waste reduction initiatives across all FCs in partnership with local Green Teams
  • Manage the TRUE Zero Waste certification process for two FCs, including writing and developing credit narratives 
  • Develop and embed the Zero Waste Policy
  • Prepare and plan for two additional TRUE Zero Waste Fulfillment Center kickoffs in Q1 2024
  • Generate and execute capacity building initiatives across our Green Team, Green Team Leads, and full company. Help us to grow the movement!
  • Deliverables include: TRUE Zero Waste certification for two Misfits Markets Fulfillment Centers, and quarterly TRUE Zero Waste initiative reports.

Other responsibilities may include:

  • Administrative and organizational work, including scheduling, coordination and organization of Sustainability Team key focus areas
  • Plan and prepare for annual Carbon Footprint measurement, Climate and Carbon Commitment, B Corporation application and more. Coordination and support of annual Impact Report.
  • Build and improve onboarding / training materials, and key Sustainability Team presentations
  • Periodic trend and progress reports in foods saved from lesser outcomes, in partnership with the Merchandising Team
  • Additional Sustainability-focused projects based on interest and business priorities

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 1-2 years professional experience, ideally within food, agriculture, operations, e-commerce and/or climate work. Post-graduate and graduate student applications accepted.
  • Strong experience in data collection and analysis, with minimum 1-2 years professional or academic experience in Excel / Google Sheets.
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication and presentation skills. 
  • Passion for curbing climate change and keeping materials out of landfill a must!
  • Bonus: 
    • Financial modeling experience, and experience with financial statements.
    • TRUE Zero Waste Advisor certification, and / or experience applying for TRUE Zero Waste certification

Schedule and details:

  • This is a temporary role, June 26 - December 15, 2023. Exact start and end dates for this role can be flexible.
  • 30 hours / week, with room for flexible working hours.
  • Sustainability Coordinator will receive a Misfits Market or Imperfect Foods weekly grocery stipend.
  • This role is primarily remote, with the opportunity to work from a Misfits Fulfillment Center. Candidates must be based in the United States. Candidates based in the Baltimore or Portland areas are given preference for this role.
