Location: Burnaby, BC (Hybrid – Edmonds Office)
Contract Duration: 12 Months
Max Inc Rate: $98.11/Max T4 Rate: $81.08/

Work Model: Hybrid (No remote candidates)

General Description

The E4 – Engineer is a professional engineer responsible for applying engineering expertise to deliver engineering, estimating, planning, and quality management services for medium-complexity infrastructure and operational projects. The role supports the safe, timely, and cost-effective execution of engineering work within the BC Hydro distribution system.

The successful candidate will analyze and resolve engineering challenges, develop safe and reliable design solutions, and provide technical guidance related to overhead and underground distribution systems operating at voltages ≤ 35 kV.

Key ResponsibilitiesEngineering Analysis

  • Perform distribution system analysis using CYME software, including:
  • Load flow analysis using CYME DIST
  • Circuit capacity evaluation
  • Voltage profile analysis and low-voltage mitigation
  • Load connection feasibility studies
  • Phase balancing
  • Conductor sizing and upgrades
  • Fault current analysis
  • Conduct protection coordination studies using CYME TCC to determine appropriate settings for:
  • Fuses
  • Reclosers
  • Switchgear
  • Capacitor banks
  • Voltage regulators
  • Perform thermal cable analysis using CYME CAP for duct bank systems.
  • Conduct pole and structural analysis using SPIDAcalc, including non-standard overhead line designs.
  • Evaluate pole line structures, conductor tensions, and clearances in accordance with CSA 22.3 No.1.
  • Experience with PLS-Pole and PLS-CADD considered an asset.

Engineering Support

  • Support capital infrastructure renewal and distribution expansion programs.
  • Prepare engineering deliverables as Professional of Record (POR).
  • Review engineering deliverables from consulting firms as Owner’s Engineer (OE).
  • Review electrical consultant submissions for primary voltage services, including:
  • Protection coordination
  • Switchgear design
  • Single-line diagrams
  • Grounding and surge arrestors
  • Variance requests from standards
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams including:
  • Planning
  • Project Delivery
  • System Design
  • Field Operations
  • Standards and Engineering groups
  • Customer consultants
  • Provide technical support for operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, equipment modifications, and system upgrades.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Fulfill Professional of Record (POR) responsibilities for engineered solutions.
  • Conduct independent engineering studies and provide safe design recommendations.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of engineering standards and practices.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to other engineering professionals.
  • Maintain compliance with Engineers & Geoscientists BC (EGBC) Bylaws and Quality Management Guidelines.
  • Follow BC Hydro Professional Practice Management Plan.

Training & Safety

  • Attend BC Hydro safety, environmental, and technical training.
  • Maintain Basic First Aid certification for field visits.
  • Adhere to all WorkSafeBC safety regulations.

Work Location & Travel

  • Hybrid work model based out of Edmonds Office, Burnaby, BC.
  • Occasional travel for field reviews or site visits (0–2 times per month).
  • Travel expenses reimbursed per BC Hydro expense policy.

Required QualificationsEducation

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognized Canadian university.
  • Power Engineering specialization considered an asset.

Professional Designation

  • Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with Engineers & Geoscientists BC (EGBC),
  • Must maintain EGBC registration and Permit to Practice for the duration of the assignment

Experience

  • Minimum 8 years of engineering experience in electrical engineering or related field.
  • Experience with electric utility distribution systems (≤ 35 kV) including overhead and underground systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in:
  • Distribution system planning and engineering
  • Protection coordination
  • Distribution design and analysis
  • Project engineering or project management
  • Engineering analysis and troubleshooting

Technical Skills

  • Experience using:
  • CYME engineering software
  • SPIDAcalc
  • Consigno
  • Knowledge of CAD systems and drawing standards
  • Proficiency in engineering design and analysis software
  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Ability to use digital signing and sealing tools (Notarius).

Additional Requirements

Candidates must provide the following prior to assignment:

  • Valid EGBC Permit to Practice
  • Active Basic First Aid Certification
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Laptop meeting recommended specifications:

  • 512 GB SSD (1 TB recommended)

Pay: $75.00-$98.00 per hour
